Surely a person with a deficient spleen is more likely to have damp. Paul Pitchford says that bananas can build yin but I would still not advise them with Spleen deficiency. Guest guest
Hi Susie, In my patient observations I have noted that Damp is a rather generalised term, for example, I note that people with SP def. can get athlete's foot. Yet people with Excess SP are more likely to have symptoms of heaviness in the body and mouth herpes. The TCM books do indeed say that a Def. SP can give rise to excess symptoms of Damp. One difference between me and the books is that with my Meridian Qi Acupuncture system I am able to categorically diagnose the root disharmony a patient is going to be subjected to. This is powerful stuff, because by knowing without shadow of a doubt what makes an individual tick (in an acupuncture sense), I can then make realistic observations which are not based on hand me down theory. In practical terms at the end of the day, if I diagnose a deficiency I will tonify points on that meridian (turn needles clockwise and remove). If I diagnose an excess meridian I will sedate (turn the needles anticlockwise and leave in). All theories in terms of acupuncture comes down to choosing points and whether the needles are turned clockwise, anticlockwise or even . TCM is focussed on patterns, I am focused on meridians, and use patterns to highlight the interplay of Root and Branches. For me the meridian is either in excess or deficient. I have verified these findings over many years and countless patients ( what I mean by this is that people get better). And so far, in my practical experimentation, people who are root SP Def. exibit consistent traits just as much as those that are Excess SP. The picture is invariably complicated because people are rarely just Def. or in Excess in a single Root meridian so one has to take note of the variables. So your question is hard for me to answer, in so far as, from my perspective and in my experience, if a person is SP Def. then I would not insert any needles anticlockwise (sedate), as, when I have done this in the past, I have exacerbated or created symptoms. Also, I have noted that Root SP def. people feel better for eating bananas. Guest guest
The way I would look at the problem of Damp and diet would be to look at potential causes for obstruction, e.g. 1) External obstruction: Diet such as excess sweets, dairy, late night eating, eating without proper attention can all cause improper transformation and transportation thereby leading to damp. 2) External obstruction: Excess worry about work or career can also lead to damage to the spleen that will cause inabilty to transform. 3) Physical damage to muscle/meridian channels - anywhere - can back up and cause qi/blood obstruction to any organ in the body. Often all organs because they are all connected. 4) Internal obstructions: Stress in any channel can back up and cause injury to the spleen. Inherited " cold qi " can hide in muscles and sinews which will block transportation and " back up " into the spleen. 5) Five elements cycle: Anger in the Liver/heart can overcontrol the Spleen preventing transformation and therefore dampening. How do I decide where the problem(s) lie? By interacting with the client and palpating I look for the obstruction (diet, stress, worry, physical damage). I find that each person is entirely different and requires a unique treatment and interaction. Rich
