Guest guest
Hi Simcha, Yes, I know what you mean. I have noticed differences with my formulas, even though they were the same from week to week. I believe that its possibly due to several reasons. Firstly, the infamous Tong Ren Tang pharmacy actually left out Huang Lian from a formula of mine (can tell by the absence of a bitter taste), which caused me problems all week. Also, tastes and effects can change if the metal machine basins are not cleaned out properly between each decoction. The fact that its metal rather than ceramic may also alter treatment effect. Some pharmacies use mineral water, others use tap water, big difference, as water is the medium. Other variables include cooking too long or too short, defective machine, poor quality herbs, etc. Personally, I'd prefer to do it all myself to try and eliminate the variables. I believe that its better to have these variables in-house and dealt with to some degree, rather than leave them with patients as these variables can greatly affect treatment effect. Having prescribed such decoctions via a popular herbal pharmacy in NY's Chinatown, I have found them to be sometimes surprisingly ineffective; several times, after asking the shop to cook the herbs in a standard cooking pot rather than in the machine, and then dispense them in the plastic bags, I saw much better results, with similar (if not identical) prescriptions. Of course there are many possible variables at play here - could be the quality of the herbs, or the pharmacy staff's compliance with the prescribed dosages, or... ? Anyone else have similar experience? Simcha
