Help with a qi kung passage pls?

In one of Ko Hung's writings there is a passage that escapes me. Much

of the poem is clear and verifiable enough, but the

phrase 'multicolored birds are inspired to look up toward them and

chirp', I don't think I understand. If anyone has knowledge about

this, pls let me know.

The context is in the poem below, translated by James Ware:

 

They chew and inhale breaths to bathe thier inner gods in Paradise.

They disregard astrology (the five planets) and concentrate on

preserving within themselves the nine gods.

They affix a lock to the sperm in the lower abdomen (gate of

life),keeping their eyes on the pole of the universe.

Drawing the light of sun, moon and dipper to within thier foreheads

(hall of enlightenment), they enter trances to confine thier bodies.

Gathering there life-giving exudate from the golden beams of

paradise,they slow down the race toward old age and retain thier

youth.

They maintain immutable the transparency natural to the centers

within thier heads, chests, and abdomens, and conduct saliva to the

lungs, heart, spleen, liver, and kidneys.

As they tend the firebelowthe bubbling crucible, multicolored birds

are inspired to look up toward them and chirp.

When they pluck the best of the brew, a unicorn sounds its note.

Then, cherishing both sun and moon in their hearts, they conceal the

gathered light within thier own heads.

After the stomach has been filled, the effects show in thier faces;

the nose becoming drenched, theeffects pass to the blood vessels.

Imbued with heavenly contentment, they summon the Six Ting gods

to sit or lie in thier hearts and chew upon the juices there.

Flourishing becomes thier inner working parts: showingflowerings of

vermilion and shoots of blue. Clear white becomes thier fat: oozinf

and dripping.

So, hunger controlled and thirst ended, no illness burgeons in them.

Spleens completely at ease, they enjoy tranquility and peace.

Thier inner spirits under firm control, their bones become filled,

but thier frames remain light.

internal alchemy, there are methods for utilizing the five colors to strengthen

the spirits associated with each organ. One method utilizes the image of

multicolored (5 colors) clouds. I suspect in this passage, Ko Hung is using the

image of multicolored brids in a similar manner to clouds. Matt

That may be so Matt, it would be consistent with the dynamics and point of view,

thanks. These things seem to refer to internal processes or affirmations of

achieving those processes, such as the little thump you get from your abdomen

when the 'processed' saliva reaches the middle jiao being called the drum. And

the phrase 'transparency natural to the centers in their heads,chests and

abdomens' refers to I guess the free, easy and vibrant flourishing of the

areas, and the mind and universe connection. Wonderful.

This teaching of Ko Hung is describing a stage of the Taoist process of

" Internal Alchemy " which is a means to achieve immortality by refining one's qi

to the point that one can (in theory) transcend the confines of the material

realm and completely spiritualize one's being. Ko Hung was one of the only

Taoist to write down some of these usually very secretive methods. Lao Tzu's Tao

Teh Ching actually contains similar information but it is so hidden within

passages of multiple meaning, few are able to decipher the alchemy instructions.

If you are interested in this subject, my teacher Hua-Ching Ni, has written two

books that directly address it. One is titled " Internal Alchemy " and the other

is a little gem titled " The Story of Two Kingdoms. " This second title is a

translation of a never published secret teaching that describes the alchemy

instructions by means of a story of a battle between a kingdom of light and a

kingdom of darkness. It gives very specific instructions although in

metaphorical language. My teacher also provides a translation to these

metaphorical terms. Some of Ni's books can be found on Amazon or should be

available through the web site of Sevenstar Communications. Regards - Matt
