Guest guest
Hi, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Rich and I am presently a student studying tuina and shiatsu in Chicago. I have studied Taijiquan and Qigong for 15 years, and actively use these energetic skills in my tuina/shiatsu practice. We (my family) have been exclusively using alternative medicines for over 15 years including homeopathy, TCM, and now Tuina/gigong. The doctor we go to relies upon tuina and gigong for all treatments with excellent results for all types of chronic and acute problems. I am looking forward to sharing thoughts with this group. Guest guest
Hi Dr. Keikobad, Since there are many ways that practitioners apply tuina and shiatsu treatments, I will simply describe the approach that I have adopted as a starting point - but there are many other viewspoints that differ from mine. First, I very much like the Matsumoto approach and that which has been adopted by Mark Seems. What I have been " taught " and adopted is that the natural state of the human energetic body is free flow of energies - this includes mental, spiritual, and physical. If there is an " obstruction " within one of these spheres, there is a potential (or likelihood) that a problem will develop in that sphere. The problem(s) once manifested in a sphere will (physical, mental, or spiritual)will ultimately spread and impact the other layers, if not treated. If there is an obstruction, then there will be an imbalance on both sides of the obstruction - one side will be yang (excess) and the other side yin (deficient). To bring the body back in balance within itself, and with itself and the outside world (there are " gates " that maintain flow between the inside and outside), obstructions must either be eliminated or minimized. When obstructions are eliminated, the energy flows naturally and balance is achieved again - like two bodies of water that meet. The way I practice tuina/shiatsu is to try to eliminate obstructions. At the physical level, I palpate the entire body looking and listening for tender spots, spots that respond to qigong touch, spots that the client leads me to. While I palpate, I try to draw a picture in my mind of the client - with their help. I am constantly communicating with my client to better understand what they are feeling and thinking and am taking directions from them - e.g. up or down more, more or less pressure, slower or faster, etc. So by listening - e.g, touch, hearing, visually, etc. - I locate the areas of obstruction. I elminate instructions using various techniques at my disposal - though I am learning new techniques all of the time. Tuina techniques my including superfical or deep pressure, rubbing, pinching, patting, etc. Each type of technique elicits a different type of response, and I let my client guide me. Qigong has a very special value in that it allows me to energetically clear cold (congealed and " used " ) qi from the body (sometimes called evil qi). It also allows me to conduit additional qi into the body by breathing in unison with the client. This sort of " jump starts " the energy flow, particularly when there is obstruction with deficiency. It is interesting, that the flow will automatically cut off when the client has had enough. This is a thumbnail sketch of the way I currently work. It is constantly changing as I am learning more - I have just begun doing this work. I hope this answers your question somewhat, and I am very interested in any advice or ideas that you think you - or any other members - would like to share with me. Thank you.
