Lecture from Dr Zhao Yu Xiang (associate professor of acupuncture

and moxibustion at Zhong Ri) on cervical spondylitis.

The same 4 set of points (cookbook) are used for all types of

cervical spondylitis with good results. The points are

1. Tianzong (SI 11),

2. Jianjing (GB 21),

3. Jaji point between C6-C7 and

4. Jaji point between C7-T1.

All points are inserted, obtain de Qi and retained for 25 mins. No

other manipulation is used. After acupuncture, a heat lamp can be

used on the area for 25 mins or moxa until the area is slightly red.

Obvious caution for the point Jianjing as it may puncture the lung,

so insert oblique. When inserting the points for Jaji, the patient

should feel a tense and heavy feeling. For Tianzong, it should feel

numb and may radiate. (The doctor did not specify perpendicular or

oblique insertion). Ten treatments constitutes one course. The

patient should notice a difference after 2-5 treatments.

The theory of the success of these points is that they relieve

inflammation of the nerves and reduces oedema. The bone disorder

remains but the symptoms are reduced. The acupuncture regulates the

channels and promotes Qi and Blood.

Jianjing regulates Qi and Blood and is commonly used in Tuina.

Tianzong is used in all shoulder disorders and is also used as a

diagnostic tool. The Jaji point between C7-T1 is next to Dazhui

which regulates the Yang and Qi. Also in relation to anatomy, it is

the point where the moveable cervix meets the fixed thoracic

vertebra.
