Guest guest
I would use Sheng Di/Shu Di Huang before I would use Bai Shao as a substitute for E Jiao. One need only look at Bai Shao to see it could not have nearly the moistening, enriching properties of E Jiao and Sheng Di/ Shu Di. I say this even though Bai Shao is one of my favorite herbs, but I use it more for softening the liver than for nourishing the blood. Many thanks for your note. It is a good example of the difficulty of finding a perfect substitute for Ejiao. My notes on BAISHAO and EJIAO are below. I will summarise the similarities and differences between them. I invite experts to add to (or correct) my notes: Yes, BOTH BAISHAO and EJIAO belong to the Main Hb Class “Tonic~Build Xue”. Both are Tonic~Restorative, Build Xue, Antianaemic in Xue Xu. BOTH Nourish Yin in Yin Xu, and Rectify Menstruation, esp in Xue Xu BOTH Build LV Xue & LV Yin; Both are Immunostimulant and Hypotensor & are used in LV & GB DYsFx. However, some large differences mean that one cannot substitute for the other in many cases: 1. BAISHAO is Bitter; sour; Cool, whereas EJIAO is sweet ~ mildly; Neutral; Mild. 2. BAISHAO Enters LV; SP, whereas EJIAO Enters KI; LV; LU. 3. BAISHAO is a better SPASMOLYTIC in LV Yang & other syndromes w pain, spasm & convulsions, whereas EJIAO is a better HAEMOSTAT in bleeding: BAISHAO: SPASMOLYTIC*; Calm LV; Calm LV Yang; Calm LV Yang Rising; Ease Pain & relax skeletal muscle & smooth muscle in muscle spasm; arm/leg ~ spasms, arm/leg pain; angina, bronchospasm; colic*; Xue Xu w muscle spasm; Yin Xu/Xue Xu w convulsion; Yin Xu/LV Yang Rising w Xue Stag +/- Qi Stag w Tendon problems w pain; Wind & Pain in Wind Bi; rheumatism in Yin Xu/Xue Xu; Wind in LV Yang Shi/Heat Shi w convulsion; Move Xue Stag; Move Qi Stas; Move LV Qi Stag; LV-Protector; LV Yin Xu, Yin Xu w Yang Shi/LV Yang Shi w vertigo, headache, irritability & insomnia; LV Yin Xu/LV Qi Stag w tendon pain/DysFx; LV Qi Rising/LV Yang Rising/ST Attack by LV Qi Shi w chest ~ pain & abdomen ~ pain*; Rectify LV; Soften LV; Spread LV Qi; ST ~ ulcer; EJIAO: HAEMOSTAT in KI Xu w metrorrhagia/metrostaxis, vagina ~ bleeding/spotting, leukorrhoea, abortion ~ threatened, bleeding (uterus/vagina) in pregnancy, etc; dysentery/dysentery postpartum, face ~ pallor/sallow, vertigo & HT ~ palpitation; menoxenia, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, etc; also in bleeding, haematemesis, epistaxis, apostaxis, haemafecia, Haematuria, haemoptysis, cough w blood; Haemostat in Heat & Xue Heat w bleeding, epistaxis & haematemesis, bleeding/dysentery ~ bloody, faeces ~ bloody, dysentery ~ bacillary*/dysentery ~ amoebic*; Haemostat in Xu Cold (Cold of Xu-type) w bleeding, esp metrorrhagia/metrostaxis, menorrhagia, haematemesis, haemoptysis & epistaxis, menstrual irregularity; Xue Xu w Bleeding, haemoptysis, haematemesis, haemafecia, haematuria, metrorrhagia, etc anaemia, leukocytopenia & thrombocytopenic purpura; 4. BAISHAO is better to Calm CNS esp w spasms & convulsions, whereas EJIAO is Adaptogen and sedative to HT, Shen (Mind) & Foetus: EJIAO: Adaptogen/Antistress; Antishock; Calm HT; Calm Shen esp in Febrile Disease w consumption of Yin/Yin Xu w Fire Shi w vexation, anxiety & insomnia; Calm Foetus in combined LV Xu + KI Xu w abortion ~ threatened / abortion ~ habitual; Also Build HT Xue, Build HT Yin; HT DysFx; insomnia esp in Yin Xu & Yang Shi, w vertigo, headaches, palpatation, lethargy, face ~ pallor/sallow, appetite ~ poor, mouth dry, sometime urine is dark w faeces ~ dry, tongue red/light pink wo coat, pulse is stringy & fast/small & fast/floating/slippery; Antifatigue/Antiexhaustion; tiredness, psychasthenia & weakness in malnutrition; Radiotherapy (Support) in radiation exposure; Boost Lymphocyte Transformation; Boost thrombocytes; purpura; Strengthen Muscle; It has some value in Yin Xu & Xue Xu w muscle spasm but BAISHAO is better here. 5. EJIAO is a better choice than BAISHAO for LU and KI problems: EJIAO can Moisten; Moisten LU; LU DysFx; LU Dryness w cough & thirst; LU Fire Shi in LU Xu w cough & asthma; LU Xu w cough ~ chronic, asthma ~ chronic/cough w haemoptysis; LU TB w consumptive fever in Yin Xu; Ki-Protector (Antinephritic); Build KI, Build KI Yin; Boost calcium absorption & accumulation; Boost growth of children Though EJIAO can Build LV in LV Xu, & is used in Damp Retention, like oedema, dysuria, strangury w Damp like Strangury w KI/BL ~ calculi, chyluria, leukorrhagia, diarrhoea~chronic; icterus. However, BAISHAO is a better choice for LV DysFx. Also, BAISHAO is Vasodilator ~ Peripheral, Vasodilator ~ HT ~ arteries & pelvic limb; it is used in Xue Stag, hypertension; Antihypoxia (Boost Hypoxic Tolerance); Antiinflammation; Antimicrobial; Build Ying; Rectify Ying & Wei; Stop Sweat; Yin Xu w sweat ~ night & Weiqi Xu/Yingqi-Weiqi Disharmony w sweat ~ spontaneous; Astringe Yin; balance Hbs that injure Yin; Harmonise LV-SP; Inhibit intestines; Yin Xu & Xue Xu w menstrual DysFx, menoxenia, menalgia, leukorrhagia & metrorrhagia. See more detailed notes, below. Any other suggestions for a good substitute for Ejiao?
