I was cleaning the leaves of a 1.5 metre rubber plant(tree) this

morning, and an old leaf broke off. The sap started to run; thick

and abundantly. It made me think how much it is like phlegm in the

human's system. Like sap in a rubber tree. Damp, thickish, needing

warmth, and for some a relocation to dry sunny deserts.

Through the body and mind, clouding, some places collecting,

nodules in the vessels and muscle. In the pulse, sluggish laboring.

-From 'The Sun King'- (concerning phlegm)

Racine's 12 year old daughter, Fanchon, went to bed with a headache.

Racine, who adored his children, went to see how she was getting on.

He found her with her head on the floor and her throat full of

water, drowning. He picked her up; she was like a wet sack. He and

his wife forced salt down her throat and rubbed her with spirits of

wine; it still seemed she must smother. finally she vomited an

appalling quantity of water which seemed to have come into her chest

from her brain; then she was perfectly all right. Mareschal the

surgeon arived and bled her; Fagon arrived and diagnosed suffocating

catarrh; he said it came from not blowing her nose enough. After

this she drove everyone mad by blowing her nose noisily all day

long.-

Isn't it interesting how many references to phlegm are in this

passage. And even tho bleeding was used for almost all ailments in

16th century Europe, the bleeding and emesis was appropriate. In

seasonal changes many animals and children do loose a bit of

gathered phlegm this way.

ykcul, what a timely topic!

Following that line of thought, what then is the difference between 'phlegm'

and 'damp', in the body

and out of it?

The sap was legitimate in it's presence; and if the child choked on 'water'

it must be

that it had turned to damp.

Yet that is not phlegm, for that is mucoid and very difficult to

expectorate.

And somehow one thinks of phlegm with a long drawn out history, not short

lived like this.

Please everybody comment.

Writes Bob Flaws in " Treatment Principles as Funnels " with reference to

Phlegm:

Transform phlegm

Disperse phlegm

Scatter nodulation.

Phlegm is made of Damp and Sleeping Fire.

To transform phlegm would mean to dry out Damp. In which case

it will not hold Fire and it will disperse.

Is this right thinkink?

What can 'scatter' nodulation mean? Dies it eman some herb, or maybe

cupping,

pressing, needling.

Can one moxa, when there is no evidence of Heat, tongue is not red and body

registers Cold?

Anyne with ideas?
