Guest guest
David and Attilio, As a science professor in human anatomy, physiology, and nutrition at a local college here in the San Francisco Bay area, I can confirm your observations regarding Consumers Union and CFSPI. It's important to have a philosophy of science approach to the diversity of basic sciences both East and West. Overcoming " scientism " really begins at home in the basic science courses that are taught at colleges and universities. I'm rereading just now essays by Wendell Berry. To date my favorite essay of his is called " Life is a Miracle " wherein he refutes (in my opinion) E. O. Wilson's thesis in the essay " Consilience " . E. O. Wilson is an entomologist who believes that science will one day answer all questions regarding the nature of life. I've added Wendell Berry's inexpensive and short essay to the required reading for my students. I've been presenting Berry's thesis now for fifteen years of teaching nutrition, anatomy, physiology and one course in virology. You could say I've been having great fun while still teaching the core curriculum. At only $11.60, I recommend to list members to read " Life is a Miracle: An Essay Against Modern Superstition " . It's only around 150 pages. You can see it at: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1582431418/002-2829562-7306455?v=g\ lance Berry's ideas are worth discussing when comparing CM to WM ... and the resulting paradigm collisions, as well as paradigm confluences. " Science " will answer all, they posit. Of course it is " their " science.
