So it has been advised to me to use the neti-pot sinus rinse by acupuncturists

and pharmacists because i have congestion, and would rahter resort to that than

taking a decongestant. And it works great for me ( I use it a few times a week)

, and I know it is recommended in the natural healing world. However today I was

talking with my friend and she said that her ENT and voice doctors have told her

to never ever use the sinus rinse. She said they say that when the fluids are

washed away from your nose, they take away fluids from your voicebox and larynx

area if i remember correctly, and is bad and dries you up. So I was just seeing

what you guys suggest and feel about this topic. Thanks.

I was feeling upset about something, but reading this cheered me up

immediately. That's by far the funniest thing I've heard all day! Thanks for

relating the story, Ashley.

Acupuncture and herbs will kill you too.

;) Hugo

So in my opinion it's good that you're hearing things, asking and getting

involved in your health.

From what I am hearing this netti pot is something that is working for you and

keeping you from having to use a decongestant. I'm not sure why your friends

doctors have said not to use a sinus rise. I know that the sinus rinses you buy

in the store have a lot of preservatives and chemicals in them, perhaps that's

why.

The allergist I go to has a regular MD and he couldn't speak more highly of

them; he just recommends you make the stuff fresh. If you're using a rinse too

often it can certainly dry you out and it takes away the mucus lining that's a

vital part of the body's immune system. I wouldn't see any problem with 2 or 3

times a week, unless you're noticing something that's concerning. Many people

do this once or twice per day. Hey, even Dr Oz being a very public figure with

an MD also recommends them highly. The main key is to mix it fresh so you avoid

all the preservatives and other chemicals.

I use warm (body temp) tap water (some people recommend bottled or other water

if you're more sensitive). Use about 1 part pure sodium bicarbonate (baking

soda) to 5 parts non-iodized table salt and make sure to avoid preservatives and

anti-caking agents because those can burn the inside of your nose (pharmacies or

health food stores are a good place to look).

Use a ball park of 1/4 tsp per cup of water and you can adjust it from there.

Adding the mix to the water makes it so it isn't burning your nose and also

helps break up the mucus. You can also buy packets that are premeasured ready

to mix with 1 cup of water.
