able to afford the medication and I can't find any herbs to suggest. Have given

accupressure points and essential oils but am looking for more information to

My guess is there is someone who can help you here. I thought I would just

mention this because you're not going to be able to get a lot of help until you

can really describe what's going on with your friend in ways that work with TCM.

COPD ends up being a western diagnosis and has some limited use but would need

more clarification to get to a TCM diagnosis (a western disease can and often

does have more than one TCM presentation).

Clarification that might be useful is how would your friend describe how they

feel with this condition? I mean obviously they probably have a hard time

getting enough oxygen, but is there anything that aggravates or helps out? What

caused the problem to begin with? If it was smoking, are they still smoking or

were they able to quit? How old are they, what kind of condition are they in,

how's their diet and activity level? Does the individual feel hot or cold? What

other types of things do they have going on with their health? Have they had

any problems with clots? etc etc etc

The main goal is to figure out what type of a pattern they have according to how

TCM would describe it before you can figure out what herbs would be useful.

Good Luck =)

Thank you for answering my question here are some of the answers to your

questions

Clarification that might be useful is how would your friend describe how they

feel with this condition?

tired and yes lacking oxygen also stressed out

I mean obviously they probably have a hard time getting enough oxygen, but is

there anything that aggravates or helps out?

What caused the problem to begin with? If it was smoking, are they still smoking

or were they able to quit?

Smoking may have played a factor but quit in the 70 genetics also play a part

as others in family have had similar problems

How old are they, what kind of condition are they in, how's their diet and

activity level?

In there late 40 's diet is not all that great but trying to change over to the

blood type diet Activity not much as this kinda takes her breath away to

quickly..trying to get into exercise simple stuff ie stretching

Does the individual feel hot or cold?

Cold

What other types of things do they have going on with their health?

Other then the copd she is doing quite fine

Have they had any problems with clots? etc etc etc

don't remeber her mentioning it at anytime

The main goal is to figure out what type of a pattern they have according to how

TCM would describe it before you can figure out what herbs would be useful.

Okay you got me here can you help me help her figure out the pattern.

As you can tell I am still learning TCM Thanks for the help this person is

special to me and I would love to help her out.

Dear shamandot,

I'm new in this group and I am suppose to observe first what goes on in this

group site before posting anything. But I sense the urgency of your friend

because I myself suffered COPD before. I know how difficult it is to suffer

with that illness. The cause of COPD is damaged lungs and there is no known

cure. They only have drugs for relief. To your question there might be a

possible solution. Here it is.

One of my patients reported to me that his COPD was healed because he himself

did much research on herbs and concluded that " Ocra " (or is it also called Lady

Finger?) He described me his procedure. Then after a few years I myself suffered

COPD. I remembered his procedure with the ocra, so I did it the way he describe

it to me. in the course of 6 months my diagnosis of emphysema later was reduced

to asthma - a lesser problem.

Here is his procedure:

take enough ocra as much as you can hold in one hand. Wash clean it and cut a

little on both ends. Boil it to a cooked condition (about 4 or 5 min?) Remove

the water. Let cool a little and mash it with one hand. Place in a drinking

glass and drink all of it including the slimy sap and the seed. I myself close

my eyes as I drink it. Do this once (1 glass) a day. According to my client's

description I followed suit and did it for 6 months. My COPH do not appear in

my x-ray anymore - I have now normal chest x-ray.

Please remember that these are our testimonies only. They worked for us and

made our COPD disappear. I cannot guarantee that it will work for your friend.

Your have just have to ask him try it to see if it do work for him. After all

ocra is cheap.

God bless, and good health,

ps: I still have my old and new x-ray with me

There is an abstract Bob Flaws translated of a research study in China on COPD

that showed that 30mg 3x per day of Re Chuan Ping He Ji proved beneficial in

addition to western treatments. That formula is

Re Chuan Ping He Ji: Ma Huang, Xing Ren, Gan Cao, Jie Geng, Zhe Bei Mu, Zi Su

Zi, and Lai Fu Zi, 10g each, uncooked Shi Gao, Yu Xing Cao, and Quan Gua Lou,

30g each, Fu Ling, Bai Zhu, and Zhu Ru, 15g, and Chen Pi, 6g.

The link to that is here:

re_id=902

I also found a book for COPD on acufinder that is not specifically TCM but does

mention some TCM herbs and acupuncture. You want to be careful about books on

alternative medicine because the quality can really vary, but if you want to

check that out the links are here:

http://www.acufinder.com/Acupuncture+Information/Detail/Natural+Approach+to+Trea\

ting+Emphysema+and+COPD

ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8 & s=books & qid=1259303240 & sr=8-1

On the amazon link you can read the first few pages and see if it's something

you like.

Hopefully someone can answer that knows more what to tell you and where to go

and what to do. It might be good to find a practitioner in your area. If you

need help finding a practitioner in your area, I'd be glad to help you out.

I can tell you that since this is a long term condition, it's likely to be more

in the deficiency category, it's also likely to involve some stagnation because

of the lack of movement and oxygen. I would second Tai Chi or Qi Gong because

they will help with movement oxygenation and a meditative state to help out with

the stress.

Hypo and hyperthyroidism are not directly addressed with Chinese herbs,

however many herbs will 'regulate' as you say thyroid functions.

There is no herb that works for both hypo and hyper to my knowledge.

If you take 100 hypothyroid persons, some will have what we'd call a Kidney

Yang deficiency, some will have qi stagnation, others will present with

phlegm damp accumulation, and others will need something for their yin

deficiency. The point being that the patient's presentation, their signs and

symptoms, guides the herb and formula choices, not their Western disease

name.
