question regarding allergies and piercings

okay, so i went for acupuncture last week for the first time for migraines, and

i also told them that I am newly allergic to sulfites. They asked me when I got

my belly button piercing and I said last July. She asked me if my migraine

symptoms have been worse since I got the piercing and I said no. HOWEVER, now

that I am thinking about it, about a month after i got the piercing, i started

to get subtle symptoms of the sulfite allergy, but not full blown. Now I know

that they asked me about the peircing since the belly button is the center of

your body and all, and the ring that I have is not 14K gold, its probly made of

metal or something. SO, would it be possible that getting this belly button

peircing could have started this sulfite allergy ? I had just bought a 14K gold

ring because i figured it would be better than what I have now, but I also was

thinking of taking it out and seeing if anything changed, but I dont know if it

would close up. If anyone has any insights, please share. Thanks.

Gold is most often the best bet because it doesn't react very much to the things

around it. Usually this looks like oxidation (when the metal reacts to the air

around it), or basically a rust (iron oxide) of sorts. Gold rings don't readily

tarnish (as compared to something like silver), and that's why electronics are

gold plated for good conductivity over time.

24k gold is pure gold, and is pretty soft so they usually mix it with something

else (silver and copper) to make a gold alloy, which is the case with your 14k

ring. So that might still have a chance of reacting with you, but it's going to

be your best bet.

I have no idea if that could cause something like that, but it wouldn't surprise

me either way. Jewelry that is not of good quality can definitely cause

problems with your body. It sounds like you have a good idea to check it out,

and see if there's something to it.

So I would go ahead and try the gold ring and see if you notice any changes.

I don't know if this ever got resolved for you, but you may also want to check

out to see if you have nickel allergy. The reaction usually looks more like

rash, but because nickel ends up being in a lot of jewelry and nickel allergy is

common enough, it still may be worth checking in to.

Good luck =)
