I edited out the link to the article since it is a downloadable PDF and from

Sunten which has a proprietary interest in the information, but

overall the article

was pretty good <http://www.suntenglobal.com/news/img/2008%20summer.pdf>.

So, download it if you want.

Bi syndrome is simply stating that there is pain due to an obstruction to

the flow of qi in the body.

There are as many kinds of " bi " as there are of " pain " . Bi pain is not

limited to arthritis, but they're all treated the same, give or take. For

instance, " chest bi " would be called " angina " in biomedicine. If getting

less than perfect grades in school hurts, then you may have " B bi " . Little

joke, there. :)

Ultimately, the goal is to figure out what isn't moving and then move it. :)

The premise is that if tissues lack nutrition of qi and blood, pain will

arise. There are two general causes for this. If you have an accident on a

freeway, you'll have a bunch of cars in a pile at one point, with a bunch of

cars backed up behind the crash. In front of the crash, you'll see no cars

at all. This is where the pain comes from, when there are no cars on the

highway. Lack of nutrition to the tissues.

Now, you can have this same lack of cars on the freeway, such as you'll find

in the early morning hours (can you tell I live in Los Angeles?) and this

can cause pain too. We'd say that this is due to " deficiency " while the car

crash scenario is " excess " .

The difference between pain due to excess and pain due to deficiency include

the following:

- excess comes and goes quickly, deficiency pain lingers

- excess pain is intense, deficiency pain is low-grade

- excess pain is aggravated by pressure, deficiency feels better with

pressure

There are also many patients who exhibit symptoms of both, and that's where

it gets interesting. :)

Acupuncture loves pain, including " bi pain " . Herbal medicines are good at

pain too. For instance, arthritis that is aggravated by cold and damp

weather benefits enormously from a formula called " du huo ji sheng tang " .

There are others obviously, and a good Chinese medicine practitioner can

pull a few ingreidents from one formula and add them to a few from another.

That's not unusual, really.
