Guest guest
Good afternoon! I am a 30 year old former martial arts student/instructor. I practiced for about 6 years every day except Sunday. I am looking for help getting back into the sport. I have had 2 children and 50 pounds of weight gain since quitting. Also I have multiple heel spurs in my left heel, which cause much pain. Also I just was in to have my right knee xrayed as it has hurt for around 5 years and is getting worse, they diagnosed me with osteoarthrits. Yes arthritis at 30 how crazy. I do not take any medications. Rarely I take a pain reliever. Against my better judgement I allowed the doctor to inject my knee joint with cortizone and was told that it will last a year max. I am not sure if it is helping or not yet as it was only 2 days ago. What can I do for these things, including the weight loss issue? Also I may want to add I am a vegetarian. (So anything with meat products is out) Thank you and I am happy to be a part of your group. I am looking forward to learning. Guest guest
Just out of curiosity, how many people older than you are there in your particular style of martial arts? I pay attention to that sort of thing. When you're young, these high-impact sports are fine. As we age, we need to alter our goals. I'm focusing on tai chi these days, but I still do my more active kung fu forms. But I'm not exactly sparing with people either. Acupuncture loves pain. But it sounds like you need a rather comprehensive approach to your entire lifestyle. I'm not really able to provide all of that, but perhaps others on this list can make some suggestions. -al. Guest guest
Prolotherapy is probably considered " point injection " which is allowed for acupuncturists (with certain conditions) in Colorado, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico, and Alabama (?). Guest guest
Don't you need a Chiropractors of MD license to do prolotherapy? - " Ross Ralph " <courtenayhealing <Chinese Traditional Medicine > Saturday, July 11, 2009 3:05 PM Re: [Chinese Traditional Medicine] Hello! Guest guest
My son, at 27 years old, is a karate instructor (Meibukan Gojo Ryu style) & there are still active instructors in their 70s & a few in their 80s in this form of karate & it's one of high impact contact. Unfortunately, even with care, one can become injured in any sport but more so in contact sports. I'm sometimes a little leery of doctors' diagnosis of osteoarthritis in someone so young unless your diet has been poor with little source of calcium & magnesium & little sun exposure. Damage, yes, but actual bone degeneration? It is possible still if the injury was severe enough without proper healing allowed before full use again. But I wouldn't assume it's not correctable to a major degree. It's worth doing your best to build cartilage tissue up again. Since cartilage doesn't have a blood supply & the cartilage producing cells (chondrocytes) don't migrate to injured tissues, it's a slow process. I'd perhaps do some research on strengthening cartilage. Two things that come to mind are plenty of vitamin C, preferably in foods but supplemental is good too & glucosamine/chondroiton. I prefer to get mine from foods but it's animal-based so that won't do for you. Would you be willing to take supplements even though they're derived from animals? You may find with weight loss, the pain in your knee diminishes greatly or even goes completely unless the joint gets over-stressed. As for your heel spurs, I'd say the best you could do about them is wrapping with a bit of padding added since all martial arts that I know of practice with bare feet. I'd be very careful of anything that involves kicking & making contact with your feet. How about seeking out a few dojos in your area & talk to their instructors about your goals. Find one that isn't highly competitive for now & that will be firm but not push you beyond what you can do now. Ask about the problem of heel spurs there & what they do to compensate. You'd be surprised at some of the tips they may give you. I know my son compensates for various difficulties & they work well. You're still very young & it shouldn't take long to get back into shape if you lose the weight too. Out of curiousity, if you're vegetarian, how did you manage to gain 50 lb in a reasonably short time? That's a lot for someone who eats plant-based food unless they've also indulged in plant-based junk food. I hope I don't sound critical but hopefully, with a healthy diet, you can also lose the extra weight fast. Make sure you get sufficient protein from other sources if you don't eat eggs or milk products too. The protein is needed for body repair & cartilage formation (forming a matrix for it to grown on). Lastly, quite a few good Oriental traditional medicine colleges are affiliated with martial arts, either by members or teachers. If you have any in your area, check them out as they often offer treatment to enable students to learn (either done by the instructors or under the guidance of one). They're more likely to be familiar with the types of injuries & the goals seen with martial arts. Judy On Saturday 11 July 2009 13:03:44 MECHELLE wrote: > Good afternoon!
