Hi all,

What is the TCM Spleen? I understand it is not the Spleen of western teaching,

but the Stomach, Pancreas, Instenstinal Tract. Is this true, and how do you

support the spleen in TCM? Could you also point me to some info about this so

that I can read.

Thank you.

The (CM) Spleen has three key functions:

1. transformation and transportation. This means digestion and

assimilation of nutrients. Call it pancreas, spleen, or " fred " , that's what

its in charge of. Key formula: si jun zi tang (four gentlement decoction).

Points: stomach 35, spleen 3, LI 4, etc.

2. holding things up. I think there's a better way of saying this, my

apologizies for not quite stating it right. When things sink such as organ

prolapses, that's a Spleen qi deficiency. So, how does this translate into

Western terms? Structural ligaments? Formula: bu zhong yi qi tang (boost the

middle, lift the qi decoction).

3. controlling the blood. This says that Spleen qi is in charge of

keeping the blood within the vessels as is appropriate. When there is easy

bruising or inappropriate bleeding (spotting between periods, nosebleeds,

bleeding gums, etc.) then we look to the Spleen, especially when the blood

looks deficient (water, pale, etc.) Formula: gui pi tang (bolster the Spleen

decoction).
