Guest guest
Dear all, I need advices for a 17 years old, female patient. 3 years ago she has been hospitalized for a couples of days because of head trauma and only found diffuse edema in brain. She has been medicated with carbamazepin 2x200mg daily. She hadn't any seizure during 1 year. 1 year after trauma, it's started whole body jerking like movement with 30-60 seconds interval. EEG, MRI didn't show any pathologic sign. She has been diagnosed as TIC and carbamazepin stopped but nothing changed. She has been suffering the illness for 1 year and her illness destroyed her education and social life. Very interesting point is she hasn't any tic like movement only during sleep and when she is in solarium while natural sun light doesn't change symptoms! Your comments and advices will be appreciated. Regards, Mustafa ANIL MD Acupuncturist
Guest guest
Hi Mustafa, Tics are generally considered internal wind in Chinese medicine. However wind can arise along with phlegm so it is wise to differentiate which you're dealing with. Also, you'll want to know what is causing the wind. Liver blood deficiency? Kidney/Liver yin deficiency? Liver fire? Is the Liver overacting on the Spleen giving rise to dampness which leads to phlegm? Or is this a Spleen deficiency alone causing the dampness and phlegm? Is it possible that there is some other fluid metabolism issue giving rise to the cranial edema? Yang deficiency? San Jiao (Triple Burner) problems? If you choose to see this as solely as an outcome of the head trauma, CM would consider this blood stagnation. If you're not really up to speed on these differentiations then just say so and perhaps we can put this into more biomedical terms. Are you only doing acupuncture or are herbs part of the treatment? Acupuncture treatments are, in my opinion, much safer in the absence of a diagnosis than the use of the herbs. -al. Guest guest
Many thanks to Al and Hugo for their kind replies. Unfortunately the patient was from another city and didn't revisit our clinic. As I learned she returned home. If she visits me again, I will inform you the progress. mbanil Chinese Traditional Medicine [Chinese Traditional Medicine ] On Behalf Of Al Stone Sunday, November 02, 2008 9:51 PM Chinese Traditional Medicine Re: [Chinese Traditional Medicine] An interesting tic case Hi Mustafa, Tics are generally considered internal wind in Chinese medicine.
