herbs and bilirubin

Greetings,

I read the post about lowering liver enzyme levels in the canine related topic,

and thought I

could ask the following-

Does anyone know if the herbal formulas Free & Easy (shao yao wan) or Shou Wu

Pill can that

cause an elevation in bilirubin levels? Or if any formulas are associated with

this? Thank you

in advance for any response.

Sincerely,

Gail

Hi Gail,

Are you saying that after taking these formulas, you have developed

jaundice? I can't think of any formulas that *increase* bilirubin levels,

only formulas that decrease it. Free & Easy wouldn't, and I'm not sure what

is in Shou Wu pills. Just he shou wu? I don't see that as causing jaundice

either.

That being said, the liver is a rather complex (Western) organ and if

jaundice is popping up, it really shouldn't be taken lightly. You might want

to check in with your family doctor to get a sense of whether or not

something needs to be done immediately, or if bed rest is all that can be

done. If an MD suggests just bed rest, then Chinese herbs dispensed by a

well trained (and licensed) herbalist would be of great value.

Thank you for responding. I have elevated bilibrubin levels and my western

doctor is

suspecting the herbs I take for this. I am not currently treating with a

Chinese doctor, but

many have recomnended the formulas I take. The Shou Hu formula is as follows-

He Shou Wu

Chuan Xiong

Fu Ling

I would like to continue with the free and easy formula as it has helped

immensly with PMS

problems.

Regards,

Gail

It is really sad that people (not just MDs) assume that if someone is taking

herbs, then the default reason for any funky lab values MUST be the herbs.

This really gets in the way of treating people, they're too skiddish about

the herbs and don't let them do their magic...

That being said, if you would like to hold off on the formulas for one month

and get yourself retested, that would answer the question once and for all.

Nothing wrong with being safe. One of the weak links in the Chinese medicine

delivery system is those premade formulas coming out of mainland China.

Their manufacturing processes are not yet up to speed in terms of safety and

purity. The state of California's Dept. of Health Services tested a bunch of

" patent formulas " about 10-15 years ago and discovered a bunch of them with

either heavy metal contamination or Western drugs slipped in to improve

clinical efficacy. I myself remember taking Gan Mao Ling and feeling really

sleepy for the rest of the day. This was because there were anti-histimines

added, but they were on the label. That's very bad. Most of these problems

have been fixed by now, but periodically another premade formula slips

through and we discover that there's something in it that isn't on the label

and if it were, it wouldn't be sold over the counter.

If you're taking something that was manufactured in the US or Taiwan, you're

probably okay in terms of the formula being exactly what it says on the

label. However my very own mother has had some elevated liver enzymes

recently. As usual, the doctor suspected the herbs. She gave them up for one

month and the liver levels were unchanged, so we put her back on the herbs

and are pursing other avenues to lower her enzymes (which are only slightly

elevated) such as losing weight. Knowing for sure is a good thing. :)
