Guest guest
For those of us who make our own Oleander Soup, the following may help in caring for our plants:The other name for Oleander is Nerium Oleander and it's a perennial as well as an evergreen shrub. The best place or environment to grow the Oleander is the desert as they do not require much care and maintenance and can bear beautiful flowers as they can adjust to hard weather conditions. The Oleander plant does not require lots of water and can survive in poor soil. The most important requirement for the Oleander plant is that it needs lots of sun light. Though the Oleander plant can grow up to the height of 20 feet, it is usually trimmed down and not allowed to grow beyond 6 feet. The flowers of the Oleander plant are boisterous as well as in very bright colors. The color of the leaves is deep jewel green and it's long. The plant should not be eaten as its very toxic and its smell is also very intoxicating The area where the Oleander is grown should not be shady and the sun should be able to come fully. The size and the color of the plants depend on the sun. If the plants get full sunlight then the flowers that bloom are bigger and brighter. The area where it is grown should have a good drainage and water should not be collecting in and around the area. The Oleander flower plant are of the sturdy types and spring up from any type of soil may it be sandy or salty, all it needs is the soil should be dry. They are easily noticed because of their beauty when planted in the home garden. The Oleander plant should be planted in a hole that is twice the width and the size of the root ball should be dug. The root balls should be inspected before it is planted. The Plant will not grow well if the roots are loose so they are required to be bundled up and made into a ball. After the root ball has been placed in the hole in the home garden it should be covered with the dug up soil or the soil that is used for potting. The Oleander plant can also be grown fro the seeds but the do not grow well from them. Taking cuttings is another process of getting the plant but planting from the cuttings should be done during peak summers. Watering of the Oleander plant is most important after it is planted. If proper care is given to the plant while it is being planted then the plants grows well and the growth rate also increases, though it's a known fact that Oleanders do not require much care an attention. Watering the Oleander plant should be only done when the soil is dry. It should be watered a few times during the dry season. An important thing to be kept in mind is though the plant does not require much of water the petals and leaves of the Oleander plant can become dry and may wither. To avoid this leaves need to be misted during hot summer days early morning before the sun starts its journey and not during the afternoons when the sun is at its peak. The plants need to be pruned in order to get a plant that looks very big and bushy and has lots of beautiful flowers. Pruning an Oleander is not a difficult task and pruning should be started early.http://www.hometipsideas.com/oleander-plant.html

Guest guest
Hi Elizabeth,As a rule Oleander thrives in the southern states. However, it is a very sturdy plant and I have heard of it growing in the northern regions. You can assure its growth and it does best when brought indoors during the winter season.
