We did try the similar, albeit smaller, jam-sized jars you buy in specialty shops. They didn't work. You should try to get a glass jar that is round. The fire cups are really better, because the suction of the vacuum is distributed around the glass evenly. The vacuum in a square-sized jar that is not round will not and may implode. Trust me: I used a vacuum suction during graduate school (chemistry), and when I had to strip off solvent quickly, the beakers I used had to be round for that reason.
