burn from an herbal analgesic patch

Does anyone have experience with analgesic herbal patches? I

fractured in my shoulder last month and am currently having physical

therapy.

My acupuncturist also suggested I use YNBY External Analgesic

Plasters. They are 4 x 2.5 inch patches that look like big, square

band aids that you stick on over the painful area.

I left the patch on over night and when I took it off, it left a

burn on the entire area the patch covered. It's been 6 days and is

only just starting to fade, and itches terribly. It feels hot to

the touch, and the only thing I can equate it to is a horrible

sunburn.

The active ingredients listed on the box are Camphor 10% and Menthol

3%.

The inactive ingredients are Borneol, Chinese Yam (Rhizoma

Dioscoreae) Herba Geranii, Lanolin, Radix notoginseng, Rosin,

Rubber, Vaseline, Zinc Oxide

My acupuncturist is away for another week, and I'd appreciate any

feedback on what might have caused this.

Thanks!

Linda

Before anyone calls out " allergy " , let me say " too

much heat " , Linda. Those ingredients increase

circulation and heat in the area they are placed

over, so if you have a tendency to develop heat in

that area already, the combination of the two (heating

patch + easily overheated skin) would result in the

" burn " . If you wish to try again, your acupuncturist

might want to clear heat from the superficial layers

first, and then have you apply the patches in thin

strips so the skin can breathe and circulate better.

In any case, nothing serious.

Those are some suggestions for starters, let me know

if you have any questions based on that,

Hugo
