Guest guest
Hi all and Bob Linde. A friend of mine, acupunctor, is suffering from polycythemia vera. His signs and symptons are related with Heat and Dryness, with red tong and a big (da mai) and flooding pulse ( hong mai). I found this text below on " ilib " , and made a translation by web. If any of u can give me a hint about the kind of herb/diet which is on the text below, I'd be glad ! If u have any experience trating this disease, please share your finds. Guest guest
I had the symptoms of polycythemia vera (too many red blood cells). Two things you want to rule out as possible etiology factors are living at high altitude and B12 shots. Either of these can trigger the production of too many red blood cells. Massage definitely can help in many of these cases. Gently check along the spine to see if there are any sore spots. If these are rubbed gently until the soreness is gone (or at least lessened), it can help some of the symptoms. Your friend will need to stay well-hydrated. This also cuts down on symptoms. The majority of polycythema vera cases have Heat Roots. Mine didn't. The TCM herbalist I saw regarded it as a manifestation of Blood Deficiency. Guest guest
Roberta: Dried Toad Skin Soup doesn't seem to be a common formula, it doesn't show in any of my books. The citation you provided just gives an abstract without details, no link to the actual article. There is a link to many more articles in Chinese on the subject of Polycythemia Vera. Chinese web searching shows a related formula that includes dried toad skin, would that help you? This is for a children's affliction that has to do with insects. Guest guest
I want to pass on some controversial info on polycythemia vera. It's controversial because the source is the psychic Edgar Cayce who gave readings for 4 people with polycythemia vera. The following is taken from Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Healing by Reba Ann Karp. My comments are in parentheses. " Polycythemia is characterized by greatly increased red cell values and an increase in total red mass. Symptoms may include a dusky redness on the lips, fingernails, and mucous membranes, headache, mental vagueness, loss of hearing, itching, and pain in toes and fingernails. " Edgar Cayce gave one reading each for four individuals with polycythemia vera, who ranged in age from eleven to sixty-five years. The most consistent causal factor noted by Cayce was poor assimilation, which was mentioned in three cases. For two individuals, this involved excessive activity of the pancreas. Other contributing factors cited included nervous incoordination, glandular imbalance, and poor circulation. Cayce's main treatments for this condition were dietary recommendations and herbal tonics, each mentioned in three instances. In diet, fruits, vegetables, and small amounts of protein sources were recommended, while sugar and starchy foods were to be avoided. " (He's talking about a more alkaline diet.) " In one case, a diet of fruit juices and water was suggested to replace the lost plasma and lower the red blood cell count. To help purify the system and build the blood supply, various tonics were suggested. Electrotherapy received two recommendations. " (It's interesting that Cayce saw the blood as needing to be built. In this he mirrors the TCM herbalist I saw who saw the excessive number of red blood cells in my case as Blood Deficiency. (This won't always be the case with polycythemia vera.) Many Westerners tend to think of Blood Deficiency solely as anemia, but this isn't always the case. The Western blood tests can be normal or as in my case, there can even be too many red blood cells. It's the quality of the Blood/ blood that counts. From a TCM viewpoint, is the Blood adequately moistening and nourishing the tissues?) " Two follow-up reports were received from individuals receiving readings on polycythemia; one noted beneficial results, and the other reported she didn't follow her reading. " The one reporting beneficial results was that of case 674, an eleven-year-old boy who received one reading for the illness. According to Cayce, an injury to the dorsal area of the spine had produced a subluxation that caused the pancreas to become overactive. The liver subsequently became sluggish and the kidneys overactive, resulting in the high red blood cell count. " To correct the disturbance in the pancrease and normalize the blood, two herbal tonics were prescribed. One was a typical version of clary water, and the other contained burdok root, tincture of stillingia, ragweed, honey, and alcohol. " Also recommended were spinal manipulations to be administered twice a week for three to four weeks, with special focus on the dorsal area. Following a one-week rest period, the adjustments were to continue for another few weeks, followed by another rest period and then further threatments. " The boy's diet was to include citrus fruit or cereal at breakfast " (but not both at the same meal), " raw vegetables at lunch, and cooked vegetables with fish, fowl, or lamb at dinner. Sugar and highly starchy foods were to be avoided. " Beneficial results were noted after the boy followed the treatments for one month. " (pp. 369-370.) " (A)subluxation that caused the pancreas to become overactive. The liver subsequently became sluggish and the kidneys overactive, resulting in the high red blood cell count. " From a TCM standpoint, what he's describing is Liver Depression with resulting Qi Stagnation. The " dusky " redness described in the opening paragraph also can be a symptom of Qi Stagnation. I've seen some TCM writers describe a " dusky " hue to the tissues in cases of Qi Stagnation. In TCM the Spleen includes many of the functions of the pancreas. Some Western writers even refer to this Organ as the Spleen- Pancreas. From a TCM 5 Elements perspective, the sequence of an overactive pancreas (Spleen) triggering a sluggish liver (Liver) may be a case of Earth (Spleen) Insulting Wood (Liver). If so, 5 Element Theory will give insights into which acupoints to work. But the kidneys also are involved. Please keep in mind that in 5 Element Theory the Kidneys exist in the same relationship to the Spleen as the Spleen does to the Liver. Giovanni Maciocia describes Water (Kidneys) Insulting Earth (Spleen) as corresponding " to Spleen and Kidney Yang deficiency. " (The Foundations of , p. 305 (1st. ed.).) One of the possible manifestations of Kidney Yang Deficiency can be that the person urinates a lot. Liquids may go right through the person. Needless to say, in some cases this can result in low blood volume which raises the ratio of red blood cells to liquid blood even higher. It can be important to differenciate between normal and subnormal blood volume in polycythemia vera. In some cases the blood volume will be normal. In other cases, the number of red blood cells in a cubic measurement of blood will be higher in a dehydrated person than in a person who is well hydrated. Thus the importance of drinking enough liquids. BUT retaining the liquids can be a problem if Kidney Yang Deficiency is present and/or an injury to or misalignment of the spine is triggering excessive urination. This is where seeing a chiropractor or D.O. or just massaging the sore point out (if possible) is very important. It can cut down on the frequency and volume of urination. Cayce mentioned a problem in the dorsal area of the spine. There can be more than one sore spot and injury or misalignment in some of these cases. The symptoms that Karp lists for polycythemia vera are some of the relatively mild symptoms. In time, breathing problems can result because the blood is so thick that gases can't be exchanged. The " dusky " coloration gives way to a bluish discoloration because of this. This is a potentially fatal disorder. At the time I was researching this back in the 1990s, what allopathic medicine had to offer was less than satisfactory to put it mildly. This is one of those conditions that you definitely want to read up on from both an allopathic and alternative standpoint. I want to go into some more detail about why Cayce meant either/or when it comes to citrus and cereal at breakfast and not both at the same meal. One thing that Cayce stressed over and over was that cereal and citrus are not to be eaten at the same meal. Citrus is acidic,BUT when taken by itself will trigger an alkaline reaction. But if you eat it with cereal or any grain product, an acidic reaction will be triggered. The diet that he recommended for polycythemia vera (and quite a few things) is an alkaline-reacting diet. Like TCM, Cayce recognized that the etiology of polycythemia vera can differ from individual to individual. Like in the case of TCM, Cayce's suggestions were individualized. I believe that interested readers can contact the A.R.E. in Virginia Beach, VA (US) for additional info on all 4 readings.
Guest guest
Roberta: As far as Shui Zhi Tang, the first ingredient is leeches, which is a blood-quickening, stasis - transforming medicinal. You may read more about it by searching on Hirudo seu Whitmania for example, there is: http://www.acupuncture.com/herbs/bloodstagn.htm There is a good deal of information about this on the web, you may want to read and decide whether this suits your friend. Perhaps the beach at Rio will make it easier on his Heat and Dryness.
