Hello folks -

I've been having some pretty intense soft tissue work done the past

couple of weeks to get rid of adhesions in my shoulders and neck.

The bodyworker I'm seeing is doing what's called Active Release

Technique, which involves lots of digging in on tight muscles and

trigger point work.

After treatments, I'm going through a fairly well defined set of

symptoms, which looks to me like I'm trying to clear a toxin.

First, I'll feel dizzy and fatigued - not a surprise, since the

treatment is pretty intense, and so there are lots of endorphins

running around. Within a few minutes, my nose starts running, with

clear, watery mucus. I feel thirsty, so I'll drink some cool water

out of the dispenser. An hour later or so, I notice that my throat

hurts, and I feel chilled, despite the warm weather - almost like

I'm coming down with a cold. Despite drinking a lot of water, my

urine has a strong, chemical odor. Later, I'll feel very queasy,

and that night I'll need a lot of covers, because I'm freezing, but

as soon as I'm warm I'll begin to sweat profusely. The next day I

will have a loose bowel movement, and with that, I will start to

feel better.

I'd like to support my body in clearing whatever the bodywork

sessions are stirring up. I can see the progression through the

systems - Kidney, Spleen, Intestine, and releasing of the surface

through sweating. What I'm unclear about is what exactly I'm

getting rid of. I'd think that feeling like I'm freezing indicates

cold, but sweating indicates heat, so I'm not sure what to think.

Anyone care to try to help clarify what's working its way through my

system?

Thanks,

Katherine

I'm not familiar with Active Release Technique. The symptoms you

describe are those of the 6 Stages of Cold-Induced Illnesses. What's

puzzling to me is that a lot of the symptoms are appearing in the

order of someone coming down with something instead of the reverse

order which usually is the case when someone is healing. (I hope

someone with clinical experience of the 6 Stages will jump in here.)

The first 3 stages of 6 Stages are Yang stages. There's Tai Yang

(Greater Yang), Shao Yang (Lesser Yang), and Yang Ming (Yang

Brightness stage. There are subdivisions to each of the 3 Yang

stages.

Tbe Tai Yang (Greater Yang) stage is the first. It relates to the

Samll Intestine and Urinary Bladder. When Cold and/or Wind invade,

these are the first two meridians to be affected. There are a lot of

posts on here about the Tai Yang stage. Two of the most prominent

symptoms of Tai Yang stage is congested sinuses and runny nose.

Usually when the invading Perniious Evil is Cold, there won't be

sweating because the Cold closes the pores. There will be

spontaneous perspiration with Tai Yang stage Wind as Wind doesn't

close the pores. With either Cold or Wind invasion there can be

pain, especially in the shoulders and neck. As long as the

Pernicious Evil is in the Tai Yang stage, the condition is still

Exterior. Feelings of Cold tend to predominate, and there can be a

fear/ dislike of drafts and of cold.

Shao Yang is the next stage. When this stage is reached, the Evil

is partly in the Exterior and partly in the Interior. There are two

substages: Shao Yang Evil with a tendency to Tai Yang and Shao Yang

Evil with a tendency to Yang Ming. In either case, nausea appears.

There may be a bitter taste in the mouth and dizziness. There can be

thirst but no desire to drink. The tongue coating may become greasy

white or gray. The most distinguishing symptoms of the Shao Yang

stage is the alternation between chills and fever or between feeling

too cold and too hot.

The Shao Yang stage relates to the Triple Burner and Gall Bladder

meridians. Sometimes an Evil can become stuck in the Shao Yang

stage, neither going more deeply into the Interior or going back

into the Tai Yang stage and leaving the body.

The third stage is the Yang Ming (Yang Bright) stage. It's

subdivided into Yeridian Evil and Organ Evil stages. It relates to

the Large Intestine and Stomach. Heat really predominates in this

stage. Perspiration increases greatly. So does thirst, and the

person drinks and wants cold drinks. The urine may become dark-

colored.

The treatment for the Tai Yang Stage and for the Shao Yang substage

tending toward Tai Yang is to induce sweating. But the appropriate

treatment for Shao Yang substage tending toward Yang Ming and for

the Yang Ming stage is to purge the intestines. I found your comment

about the problems resolving with a bowel movement very interesting.

I've presented these stages like people always progress through each

one of them in an orderly fashion, but this doesn't always happen.

Sometimes a person will skip Shao Yang and go right into Yang Ming.

Sometimes recovery will be like backing up through stages, but not

always.

The number one cause of people going into the Tai Yin stage is too

vigorous of a treatment with cooling herbs during the Yang Ming

stage.

In the Yang Ming stage and the Shao Yang tending toward Yang Ming

substage, inducing sweating will make the person sicker. Inducing a

bowel movement with herbs (or having one because of acupoints worked

(even if the person doesn't realize that s/he was working

acupoints)) is the proper treatment.

Are you feeling better overall as a result of these treatments?

Hi katherina,

The cold is possibly because of all the tension and pain

involved, because of the pain, you contract the muscles, that

reduces the blood flow to the areas that where worked on, the

dizziness probably is because of the neck work, that would affect

the area around the ear. Later the body releases the tension, the

blood flows normally again, opening the pores and releasing the

toxins.

There is much more happening, but i don't know what trigger

points he's working on, some trigger points match acupuncture

points.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies on this question.

It was a bit of a surprise to think that cold was being unleashed,

since I'm usually more prone to heat in the summer. But on that

theory, I brought some dry ginger and had some in hot water right

before being worked on this last time, and things seemed quite a bit

better afterwards. It could also be that most of whatever has been

locked up in my muscles has already been chased out, but for whatever

reason I feel better, so I'm not complaining. ;-)

Thanks again,

Katherine
