Guest guest
Has anyone ever used this? I was wondering if there were any side effects. I will be going to the dentist and wondered if taking this would interact with the Novacaine. Thanks Bobby
Guest guest
It will be fine with the novacaine. It is a great formula used for loose stools from spleen qi def. Interestly I find that in some people a lower dosage is more effective than a normal or high dosage. bob www.acuherbals.com gwenbob39 <gwenbob39 wrote: Has anyone ever used this? Dan Bensky and Randall Barolet in Chinse Herbal Medicine Formulas and Strategies list the following caution for shen ling bai zhu wan: " Use with caution and only after significant modification in cases with concurrent heat from yin deficiency. " (p. 240.) One variation of shen ling bai zhu san contains Pericarpim Citri Reticulatae (chen pi). It's contraindicated in cases of " dry cough due to yin or qi deficiency. Use with caution when the tongue is red, and in cses with hot phlegm or dry heat coughs, or spitting of blood. " (Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica, Revised Ed., Dan Bensky & Andrew Gamble, p. 232.) I don't know if dentists still use Novacaine. I believe they're using other drugs today. One practice that could cause a problem for you is that some of the newer numbing drugs are mixed with I believe epinephrine. I can see a possible problem with the ginsing if the dentist uses something with epinephrine because like ginsing, it does raise blood pressure. It's a " fight or flight " hormone. To be on the safe side, you might tell the dentist that you're on a formula with ginsing in it and you don't want to be numbed with something with epinephrine in it. I found out about this the hard way a couple of years ago. I had never heard of epinephrine being mixed with numbing drugs. As my heart rate speeded up and I felt more and more like I wanted to do laps around his office, I finally asked him if some adrenal-like drug was in what he numbed me with. He said yes. He had to wait until I got back to normal and then he had to inject more numbing drug into me without the epinephrine. Ever since that time, I've always been very careful to tell dentists to not use anything with epinephrine or any adreanal-like drug in it because I react to it. Since there is ginseng in the formula you take, I would ask for numbing without epinephrine or anything with an adrenal-like effect. I'd also mention to the dentist that you're on ginseng and that there are some other herbs in the formula that can cause problems with potassium levels (hyperkalemia) when used with potassium- sparing drugs. (The herbs that could cause this aste Ful Ling (Poria) and Yi Yi Ren (Job's tears barley) and Shan Yao (Radix Dioscoreae Oppositae). Jie Geng (bellflower root) could reduce the effects of antibiotics, and could cause digitalis intoxication and heart arrhythmias. That's another reason to forego the epinephrine. The info on possible problems was taken from Herb Toxicities & Drug Interactions: A Formula Approach by Fred Jennes with Bob Flaws, pp. 228- 231. Guest guest
Bob Thanks very much for your thoughts. It was reccomended to me to remove dampness?? I just started with an Accupuncture/herb person. But I still like to research for myself too. I have learned that you need to be involved with your health and healing. I have never taken much in a way of herbs. Just single things like Ginseng. Some herbal teas and Maca. The Shen Ling Bai Zhu Wan that I have has Ginseng,Rhizom atractylodis marocephalae, poria, rhizoma dioscoreae glycyrrhiza, semen coicis, platycodi, fructus amomi 180mg each pill. Is that alot in herb sense when it says to take 5-8 pills 3 times a day. Upon researching it I see they may differ in herbs. So now I'm very confused. This one says it strengthens the Spleen and stomach and removes Dampness, Stagnate food. Thank you for your help Bobby > > It will be fine with the novacaine. Guest guest
Thank You for your kind reply. I too have had the numbing agents that did include the Epinephrine. I requested not to use them but the the alternative never got me numb enough and if it did it wore off quickly. I do recall one time my heart decided to dance after I was given the numbing agent. But it also did not last very long. Needless to say I did not like it. So with limited options I have to use the Epinephrine based one. I just might now forgo the herbs until after my appointment. This shen ling bai zhu wan that I have does have Ginseng in it. Recalling from years back I took Ginseng and I felt more energized. I'm glad I did find this forum to further help me as I introduce herbs to my body. As you may have read in my other post this is all new to me and I just started going to a Accupunturist/herb practioner. But I do like to research on my own and I have learned to be involved with my health treatments. > > Dan Bensky and Randall Barolet in Chinse Herbal Medicine Formulas > and Strategies list the following caution for shen ling bai zhu wan: > > " Use with caution and only after significant modification in cases > with concurrent heat from yin deficiency. Guest guest
Hi Gwen, I'm curious what brand herbs it is...it seems to be missing a few herbs, but it is not uncommon for some of the smaller less known companies to not list all of the ingrediants. It should also have Dolichos lablab seed and nelumbo nucifera seed (this is Bai bian dou and lian zi....I'm better at the chinese than the latin). It is also actually rare that formulas such as this actually use ginseng...many commonly use Dang Shen (codinopsis) which is in this formula an exceptable replacement. It would be somewhat expensive (compared to other formulas) if it has ginseng (ren shen). This formula is usually prescribed for spleen qi def causing chronic diarrhea/loose stools. Guest guest
Bob Its written very very small in fancy lettering and even with my reading glasses I cant make it out. They are little black balls. I was told this would help remove dampness. I dont have diarhea/loose stools. Just heartburn and some off intestinal issues. Will this then cause problems if I take it? What does removing dampness mean. I failed to ask. The first ingredient is the Ginseng. So thats Why I thought I should ask if this was okay to take knowing that I had a dental appointment and will be needing some numbing agents. Thanks Bobby > I'm curious what brand herbs it is...it seems to be missing a few herbs, but it is not uncommon for some of the smaller less known companies to not list all of the ingrediants. Guest guest
Most of the chinese patent formulas are little black balls. This formula does help with dampness... just an interesting choice. I'll let victoria tell you about the Dampness....she gives such great explainations....Chances are the are seeing this formula as very good for some of the intestinal problems. bob www.acuherbals.com gwenbob39 <gwenbob39 wrote: Bob Its written very very small in fancy lettering and even with my reading glasses I cant make it out.
