The Liver channel reaches the top of the head internally and is the

most frequent cause of headache there.

" A headahe on top of the head is most often due to deficient Liver-

Blood being unable to reach the area. This headache will improve if

the patient lies down and it will be dull in character. In a few ases

a headahe in this area may be due to Liver-Yang rising, in whih case

it will be sharp in character.

" There are also other causes of headache in this area not related to

the Liver channel, such as deficient Qi and Blood unable to reach the

top and Heart-Blood deficiency.

" A headache on the top of the head only should not be confused with

one that affects the top but starts all the way from the base of the

occiput. This type of headache is due to the Bladder channel. " (p. 8.)

That last paragraph is important when it comes to differentiating

causes of headaches on the top of the head. " Occiput " is an

anatomical term for the back of the head or skull. These are Wind-Cold

or Wind-Heat invading headaches. The key is that the headache starts

on the neck and/or back of the head. These Wind-Cold and Wind-Heat

headaches frequently do not stay confined to the occiput but migrate

to the top of the head or to the forehead. Keep in mind " In a few

cases, frontal headaches can be due to a residual pathogenic factor,

such as external Wind, which has not been expelled after an invasion

of exterior Wind-Cold or Wind-Heat. " (p. 9.)

Why does the Bladder meridan get hit so often with Wind-Cold and Wind-

Heat? Because the Bladder and the Small Intestine meridians are the

most external of the meridians. They're the Tai Yang (Greater Yang)

meridians. Because the Greater Yang meridians are the closest to the

surface of all the meridians, they get hit with Pernicious Evils

before other meridians do.
