I think that one important reason why so many people are so cynical

about the proffesion of medical practice is because they have failed

so many times and been disapointed by so many experiences and wasted

so much money - that it is impossible for them to be optimistic. I

think that all practioners should be alert to these kinds of reactions

in their clients - many do not show it or overtly express it but they

are insecure meeting a new health provider - they have seen so many

that they have good reason for this insecurity. Some people have had

bad experiences with health care providers others are 'bad' patients -

usually meaning non-compliant - so the mentality of the patient might

be very complicated - with a sense of hope and enthusiasm on one hand

and a deep fear and suspecion on the other.

For natural healers the greatest problem in practice now and always

has been the fact that natural healing is a process - an unfolding -

this might take some time and unfortuantely many clients do not have

the time, money, or patience to stick with the protocol long enough to

get the benefit. I often hear a criticism against accupuncture from

clients in the western countries - it is too expensive. In western

countries the practioner is in a real bind - maintance of their

practice is very expensive - from office rent to everything else - and

they must make a living - yet their healing system often takes time

and a large percentage of clients give up without getting maximum

benefit. I know master accupuncture practioners that have very busy

practices but in the long run their relationship with the clients and

the healing process is not fullfing because so few clients complete

therapy. A friend of mine who is a Chinese physician in San

Francisco's Chinatown says that even at the lower level of pricing

that they do there the cost of herbs is going up so rapidly that many

patients can no longer afford herbal therapy that might take many

months are even years to get the results in chronic disease processes

- he says that in his own practice the chronic disease patients are

becoming less and his practice is based now mainly on acute cases.

Victoria mentions the victim mentality that many people have - this is

a major reason why patients have put their health care providers on a

pedestal - they feel totaly powerless in the face of their disease and

are simply turning their their life over to the great God of medicine.

This approach to our own lives is a pathology and one that the doctor

is often unable to help with. Such people unfortunately often end up

in the hands of the mainstream medicos - they will give you powerful

medicines that will stop the pain - they will cut out what ever organ

is diseased - they will suppress disease process - etc! We natural

practioners do not have such questionable tools - and we often seem

less powerful to the 'victim' kind of mind - a kind of mind that can

not make decisions for themselves. The client must participate in

their own healing - otherwise what power do we really have to help?

Funny story (really sad) - My sister-in-law has many health problems

and she is always talking to my wife and daughter (both physicians)

about her problems and always wants to know what they can give her to

help with her many symptoms - she lives terribly - and my wife and

daughter give her advise on diet and other issues even doing a little

psychotherapy on her - but she never gets any better because she does

nothing to achieve her goals - she asked my daughter - you mean their

is nothing in your medicine that can help me at all? - my daughter

told her - I could help you if I had a prison - my sister-in-law

looked shocked - saying - what do you mean - my daughter said - Auntie

- we could solve all of these problems if we could put you in prison

and control every aspect of your life including every bite of food you

eat and having a nurse make sure you take your medicines correctly and

that you rest enough and that you do not go under stress - and uncle

is kept from you so you would not be stressing yourself out about him

and you would not be able to argue with him all the time - and we

would keep you from knowing what is going on with the kids - or what

is going on in the outside world - if I could keep you in prison for

just six months we could get a lot of these things under control - but

- I have no prison - we all laughed at this but - the truth that this

story represents is a fact of life for many.
