Guest guest
Hallo, I cant offer any tcm help as I am very much a learner myself but I do have an observation to offer as a retired midwife of many years. Common practice wherever I have worked is to weigh the baby at birth and again at 6 days old. This is to check that the baby has not lost too much weight, though it is considered normal for babies to lose up to 10% of their birthweight within the first week of life. Your grandchilds weight gain of over a pound in the first week of life seems amazing to me and I cant recall ever coming across such a weight gain before. Now the baby is one month old and weighs 10 pounds. So baby is putting on nearly a pound a week. This is just an observation as this might be quite normal in the part of the world and culture you are from. But if this problem was presented to any midwives that I have ever practised with, the first thing they would suspect, looking at the weight gain, is overfeeding. But of course this may be the weight gain is an effect of what is wrong with baby not the cause. Still, in my experience, babies are expected to have an intial weight loss after birth and then start to gain weight, so by the time they are one week old they are usually below or just at their birth weight. Hope this can be of some help Susan
Guest guest
If the child is nursing I would suspect something about the mothers milk is not acceptable - high acidic states in the mother can cause the PH of the milk to be to acidic - this is phlegm forming for the infant. High phlegm conditions in the mother can be transferred to the child. In that case the mother should see a TCM authority and correct her own problems for the benefit of her child. If the child is taking formula in the bottle but who looks like she is healthy but has all of these phlegm issues she might also be allergic to what is being given - many children are allergic to the milk from cows - many formulas contaning soy products cause allergic reactions in many children - in my opinion children should not be given these powdered formula mixes. Things to try to see if this is the case is to give the child either organic milk from grass fed cows or organic goats milk - this will reveal if this is a gross allergy to something being fed. If the problem continues the child should be under the care of an expert - having high levels of phlegm are not innocent and should be corrected. Bob Flaws and Honora Wolfe have written extensively in TCM pediatrics.
Guest guest
Thanks, Susan. This is why it's important to have a variety of different healers from different backgrounds on here. Each has different areas of expertise, and as a result, a very comprehensive picture emerges of possibilities.
Guest guest
thanks susan, because youae a midwife i wonder if you would know if the fact that mom was induced with pitocin may have a bearing on this. I had a passing thought that overfeeding was a possibility, but it passed and I never addressed it because each time she eats she brings much of it back up . What seems more congruet with the situation to me is vinod's comments about the mom's milk. She has alwys suffered with excess phlegm. Thank you all so much for your input. It is very much appreciated
Guest guest
I have never come across any connection between induction of labour and feeding problems of any kind. Induction is very common so would expect to see many problems such as you are having in the community. Do you have access to any midwife/community/health visitor support for advice etc. Some countries provide a great deal of support for the first few weeks after the birth so the new mum has plenty of help when needed. Who weighs the baby and are there midwives there? I agree that if the mother has phlegm then this could be causing the problems. However, you mention vomiting and that baby brings much of the food back up, but I would expect this baby to be losing weight if there was a lot of vomiting, or at least the weight being static. The weight gain, plus wet and dirty nappies, points to baby thriving. Wishing you all well Susan

My oldest son was colicky when very young and would get worse when I had anything chocolate. My younger son would react when I ate tomatoes. So if she's nursing, her food will very much affect her milk. sue
Guest guest
The baby is conpletely breast fed , except for the med's and the tea. Vinod recommended goat milk. We have goats here on our land, how would one treat fresh goat milk for consumption?

Mom's diet is okay it may not have been previously but currently it is fine.. Midwives delivered the baby, and she see's a pediatrician for her check up.
