Guest guest
Hello everyone I would like those of you so incline to share their insights on this situation with me, The child involved is my granddaughter, She turned 1 month old this past Sunday. She was experiencing lots of bloating, very difficult and painful to expel gas, evidenced by beet red face, clenched fists, stiffly outstretched limbs, awful crying, grunting and screeches of pain, powerful expulsions of gas after much exertion, hiccups, vomiting, while nursing, after being nursed and burped, and while lying down. The vomiting sometimes contained a lot of mucous, sometimes would be a little curdled, and on 3 occasions had been projectile, mostly mucous, clear and slimy, mixed with the milk of course, reminicent of nasal discharge. Baby is hungry and wants to eat, very frustrated, but continues to thrive, birthweight was just under 7 lbs. 1 week later later she was 8 lb., and yesterday thurs.7/27, she was 10 lbs. Baby has to be watched all the time because the mucous would come just to the back of the throat and not come out effort to remove with aspirator were less then successful and caused her to gag. I just try to get as much as I can out with a finger when that happens but more often than not she ends up swallowing it. Overall she did not have the demeanor of a sick child, but I was worried because I know this much mucous is not a good thing, she also had it pooling in the corners of her eyes. So I had her Mom take fenugreek in hopes that it would clear the mucous up. Mom was on the fenugreek about 4 days and it seemed like it was making the mucous more available to the baby, vomiting became more frequent, and gagging on unexpectorated mucous did as well so I had Mom stop taking it. It seems that the mucous would keep building for a week before baby's diminished capacity to contain it caused it to be violently expelled. My daughter and I are groggy with sleep trying to keep vigil to make sure nothing happens to the baby and my daughter is growing more anxious about the whole thing because it is not resolving as easily as I have led her to believe it would. Massage and acupressure help a great with calming the baby, who is quite agitated as well and young as she is has undergone a personality change because of all this discomfort. Desperate for some relief for all three us I decided to use inula helenum. It is a cooling expectorant with downward Qi. It lessened the amount of times she vomited, and brought up mucous more easily, but of course the problem continued. I fashioned a belly band for her, to support her stomach muscles and prevent a hernia from all the straining she does. She is on medication now, as outlined below. my question to the group is how to characterize this from the TCM standpoint, differentiation, my guess is damp heat in the lowerburner. but how did this happen to a brand new baby, Should I discontinue herbal treatments in favor of allopathic meds? It has just been one day but she looks lethargic now. What recommendations and advice can you give to us? I am most appreciative of any and all help. Rabiah Her first week home from the hospital was normal and uneventful, she nursed, burped and slept, normally. The second week is when the vomiting and gas started. We thought it was normal at first, then we assumed colic. I had Mom change her diet, no dairy, no cruciferous veggies and gave baby dilute infusion of anise or fennel. But this didn't help enough to ease our concerns. we took her to the doctor who said the he could hear a lot of gas in her stomach, was normal and was reflux told us to change mom's diet as mentioned above and come back in a week. That week was up yesterday and they prescribed zantac, for the gas, and metoclopram to help baby's muscles operate in sync. My daughter is 21 yrs, this is her first child. She has a history of asthma, allergies, and excess mucous, always feeling that mucous is just in the back of her throat. Her tongue is usually white fur and wet, no lines or other marks. Baby's dad has some sort of gum problem, they bleed, and are spongy, he also has a deep linear crack down the center of his tongue. Baby's tongue has been a little red at the tip and had white fur at one point, but it turned yellow on the lower left edge yesterday. Guest guest
I once worked with a skilled chiropractor who would do spinal adjustments on infants for this very problem with immediate results. Pediatric tuina several times daily...between meals should help also. It's worth a try. Good Luck..your family has my sympathies.
