Guest guest
I thought someone else with some more know-how on the subject would have a better response than I, but no one else has responded, so I will take a stab at it. It is funny that you should mention both 12 midnight and 3am. If I remember correctly the liver function starts at midnight and continues on till 3am. A lot of times if there is an imbalance in a certain area, you will notice some phenomena at that time, just like what you mentioned of waking up. I am assuming that you live north of the equator and are in the summer season where you are at, and in summer if you have a heat problem with your liver, then it generally gets worse. It wouldn't ever be a bad idea to find a board certified practitioner in your area (link at the end), and see what they suggest. One thing that I heard can help relieve some of the symptoms of this is eating a lot of watermelon or tropical fruits. I still am kind of new to all of this, and all of this is kind of general information, and might not even be right for your situation. That's the biggest reason why it would be helpful to see a board certified practitioner, they know all of the subtleties and how to work with them. Anyways, you can also try a watermelon drink, if it is the summer time where you live because summer adversely effects the overall yin, especially in the kidney's, and if you have a liver heat imbalance. You make it by getting a fresh watermelon from the grocery store and slicing it up into small pieces. You will then take these pieces and put them in a blender or some sort of food processor. Don't worry about the seeds because most blenders will not chop them up, and will be easy to remove later. Then you will take a strainer with large holes and strain off the seeds and the excess pulp (a small strainer will get clogged quite easy, so if you want less pulp maybe strain it with a large one and then strain it with smaller and smaller until you get the amount you want), and then just drink that if you are alright with watermelon (like you don't have allergies or a taste preference against it). Anyways that is a pretty cheap thing that might help you out, and if it doesn't, it wont hurt you. Hopefully this will help give you some background information until someone on the list with more knowledge and know-how can reply. There is probably also some more information that would be of use for you if you are looking to conceive, but again I will leave that to the more advanced posters in the group. Being able to get to sleep OK but waking during the night points to the possibility of Kidney Yin Deficiency. Having trouble falling asleep but sleeping soundly once one does indicates the possibility of Heart Blood Deficiency. Sometimes a person can have both in which case the person has trouble falling asleep and wakes up during the night. Waking early and being unable to get back to sleep points to the possibility of Gall Bladder Deficiency. Giovanni Maciocia writes, " Sleep depends on the state of Blood and Yin. Blood and Yin are the 'residence' of the Mind: without Blood and Yin, the Mind has no residence and it floats at night causing insomnia. " (The Foundations of , p. 159.) " Shen " is translated by some as " Mind " and by some as " Spirit " . The fact that you wake up hot also points to Yin Deficiency. Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang Deficiency can both be present. In fact, that's the usual situation though one will always be worse than the other. TCM healers go by the client's sensations of hot or cold and not by the actual body temperature. Though that is taken into account. For example any time someone comes in with a lower than normal body temperature, the possibility of Kidney Yang Deficiency and/or Blood Deficiency is going to be considered and ruled in or ruled out. So why is it important to go by the client's sensations of temperature? The client's actual body temperature may be below normal - say 97 F for example - but the person reports feeling hot in the afternoon or evening. Feeling hot in the afternoon and evenings is one of the main symptoms of Kidney Yin Deficiency. The person's main problem may be Kidney Yang Deficiency, but there's significant Kidney Yin Deficiency too. The healer may want to include a few more Yin tonic herbs in the formula for Kidney Yang Deficiency than one usually includes in these formulas. Guest guest
The Gall Bladder is predominate from 11pm to 1 am, the Liver from 1 am to 3 am, and the Lungs from 3am to 5am. For the readers new to TCM: There are 12 basic meridians (pathways of Qi ( " energy " ) flow. During each day each of those 12 meridians will have a two-hour period of maximum activity. Sometimes something happening at a specific time can be diagnostic. For example, the person has a definite lag in energy and feels worse than usual between 5pm and 7pm may suffer from a Kidney imbalance because those are the hours of maximum activity for the Kidney meridian. Waking every night or most nights between 3am and 5am may indicate Lung imbalance. Or, it could be something else. Careful questioning is necessary. Not only can these times of day be diagnostic, they can also figure into therapy. It doesn't happen very often, but sometimes treatment will need to be given during certain hours in order to be effective or to have maximum effect. The time will vary according to if sedation or tonification is needed. The other times of day are: Large Intestine, 5am to 7am. Stomach, 7am to 9am. Spleen, 9am to 11am. Heart, 11am to 1 pm. Small Intestine, 1pm to 3pm. Bladder, 3pm to 5pm. Kidneys, 5pm to 7pm. Pericardium, 7pm to 9pm. Triple Heater, 9pm to 11 pm. Don't worry about what the Pericardium and the Triple Heater are for now. For now just know that the Pericardium has something to do with the Heart, and the Triple Heater has to do with Fluid balance (among other things). For the intermediate students on the list: These are solar hours, not clock hours. The exact times will vary depending on the latitude the person is at and the season of the year. But for now, this is a rough guideline.
