Kong

Main Category: Public Health News

Article 08 May 2006 - 0:00am (PDT)

The Department of Health (DH) today (May 3) urged members of the public not to

take four kinds of proprietary Chinese medicines (pCms) after laboratory tests

revealed that the total bacterial count of the products exceeded the maximum

permitted limit.

These products are Po Wo Tong Hou Tsao San of production batch 336822, Po Wo

Tong Po Ying Tan of Batch 1398, Po Wo Tong Ging Fung San of Batch 36788 and Po

Wo Tong Wui Chun Tan for Children of Batch 121286, manufactured by the Hong Kong

Po Wo Tong Medicine Factory Limited. According to the manufacturer, only the

first two products were put on sale in Hong Kong.

A spokesman for the department said investigation into the products started

after receiving a referral from the Macau government regarding the recall of the

Po Wo Tong Hou Tsao Sanof Batch 336822, of which the total bacterial count

exceeded the maximum permitted limit for pCm registration in Macau.

The manufacturer voluntarily initiated and completed the recall of the product

in Hong Kong on April 25 and has also initiated today the recall of Po Wo Tong

Po Ying Tan after being informed of the test result by DH.

" Members of the public who have purchased the products concerned are advised to

stop using them, dispose of the products or surrender them to the Pharmaceutical

Service of DH at 3/F, Public Health Laboratory Centre, 382 Nam Cheong Street,

Kowloon during office hours, " the spokesman said.

Please be cautious in buying medicines from the Orient. There are

dozens of companies manufacturing and rebotteling medicines. Most of

these companies do not follow standard manufacturing practices and

it is impossible to know what is in the product. Many products have

been found to have completely different herbs in the bottle than

those listed on the label - others have had hormones and other

western medicines in them. Only a handful of manufacturers recieve

international recognition for their manufacturing standards - Plum

Flower - etc. Some companies in China are world leaders in producing

state of the art herbal products. Many of the new techniques of

extraction have brought a level of standardization that has never

existed in herbal medicine before. The professional community of the

world greatly appreciates this new high level of standardization.

The problem is that there are few companies that conform to these

high standards. Plum Flower as an example is famous for testing

their herbal products for contamination and test for GMF, heavy

metals, and insecticides.

Many of the most respected companies in the west use only the

highest quality of herbal products from China. Blue Poppy - Dragon

Herbs - etc. I have reccomended Ancient Way because the owner there

sells a wide range of formulas and single herbs of the highest

quality (and good prices). Buy from respected companies since there

is really no other protection.
