It's given to induce labor. Relaxin and Oxytocin are two of many peptides that fulfill mediating functions in the cells - in TCM terms they are neither Yin or Yang they are intermediate neutral functions that facilatate either Yin or Yang functions. There are hundreds of such peptides that facilatate enzymatic functions in thousands of metabolic pathways. Using any of these substances theraputically in isolated form does not seem intelliegent to me. There is no one in the world who really knows what they are doing when they do this. The synthetic forms of such peptides such be avoided like the poisons they are. Ambien was mentioned - all of the Benzo type drugs (CNS depressants- Ambien is not a Benzo but it works in the same way - it depresses the CNS) cause amnesia - it isn't that the person does not know what they are doing - they forget what they did. Ambien seems to be one of these drugs that causes the worst amnesia. Depression of the CNS is the opposite of what most people for whom these drugs are prescribed - need. These drugs can spoil the life they are highly addictive and it is very difficult to overcome these addictions. One of the authoraties in Benzo addiction is Dr. Heather Ashton - I have seen her protocal used on several people - combined with herbal therapies to support the body in the hundreds of possible symptoms that develop during withdrawal - accupucture is also helpful during withdrawal. The harm that these drugs have done is immeasurable - because of the epedemic of insomnia and anxiety that is arising - these drugs are being more and more prescribed although this catagory of drugs was discredited many years ago - as a result we are also developing an epedemic of addiction to these drugs. This addiction is much worse than the original symptoms that the drug was prescribed for. Here is a link to Dr. Ashton's site - http://www.benzo.org.uk Depression of the CNS is a stupid concept since we all need as much responsiveness as possible from the CNS to function properly - depression of the CNS depresses functioning at every cell - so it creates the type of hypometabolism syndrome we have been recently discussing - 'false' hypometaboism. This is WRONG!!! Dampening functioning is not the answer to excess excitatory functioning - discover the cause of this over stimulation and resolve it - this will allow the SNS to relax and there will be no need to suppress natural and vital functioning. Opium depresses functioning yet very few would advocate its use in overstimulation - yet many freely prescribe substances that do the same things as opiates in another way. Muddled thinking going on here. I have extreme prejudice against all such depressive substances because I have seen with my own eyes the harm they do and the difficulty people have had withdrawing from them.
