Anyone intertested in TCM should understand that TCM is a broad system of knowledge and practice. The Master's of old have developed several approachs to achieving Health and Enlightment. The modern medical practice of TCM that we all think of as TCM the TCM of Master clinicians like Bob Flaws are 'Medical' systems. There are other schools of health and healing. One of the oldest and most enduring schools is the school that does not approve of the use of medical herbs and therapies - the school of the 'naturalists'. Who believe that one should not take substances that have the potential for side- effects. They have many reasons for believing this - but one basic understanding is that if a medicine has the ability to radically affect physiological function then that medicine might also be causing harm (side-effects). Many of these medicines are seen as crutches for dealing with symptoms but may ultimtetly be suppressing disease processes. Throughout history experience has taught that there are a catagory of herbs that do not suppress disease or create side-effects (if taken properly). These substances were called Superior herbs because their functions are considered supportive of the three treasures and do not suppress anything they are a type of 'super food' - many of the most famous herbs of TCM fall into this catagory. Indeed the whole herbal science of formula development is mainly based on these herbs. This approach to healing has as it's objective the support and building of the Three Treasures - Jing-Qi-Shen - in otherwords the foundation energies of the human body - it pays less attention to the disease syndromes and works instead to develop the basic strengths of the body in the belief that it is these functions of the Three Treasures which heal all problems that have developed. This is the system advocated by many of the greatest minds in history. This is the system that makes the most sense to me - especially for anyone working on their own problems without the benefit of a thorough education in TCM Diagnostics and Theraputics. Here are several links to Dragon Herbs - http://www.dragonherbs.com/philo/superior_herbs.asp http://www.dragonherbs.com/glossary/glossary.asp?id=67 http://www.dragonherbs.com/glossary/glossary.asp?id=72 http://www.dragonherbs.com/philo/index.asp Ron Teeguarden the owner of Dragon Herbs is a great advocate of this system of knowledge. His site is very interesting and full of useful information for anyone trying to understand where to start when working on their own. One of the things I like a great deal about Ron's site is his description of the herbs - which gives all of the basic facts of herbs and their usefulness in buiding the Treasures. Another point I like is Ron's up to date knowledge of the Chinese and Japanese research and clinical experience in the use of herbs. He knows a lot about the popular cultural use of herbs. Herbs are becoming a kind of fad in Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Japan. Most of the products being developed to help people deal with the stress of modern life use many of the 'Superior' herbs as well as many 'new' herbs introduced to the Orient in modern times. Many of the Dragon Herb formulas are classic formulas or they are modern modifications of classic formulas - plus some new concepts that are being developed by modern researchers. The herbs used are the best available quality - which to me is very important because since in China there is not good enough quality control in the herbal medicine industry. There are only a handful of companies who are universally respected. Plum flower and a few others produce herbs to the highest modern standard of herb production - they lead in state of the art herbal extracts etc.. these companies also quarantee that most of their products do not contain heavy metals and insecticides, etc. These products are a little more expensive but one has the assurance that they are taking the best forms of the herbs described on the labels. My family is insistant on only taking these high quality herbs. If one is interested in working on their own health issues then I can not reccomend a more useful knowledge than the study of the building of the Three Treasures. Tonic herbs combined with mild exercise and diet is the surest and quickest way to start the healing process. I have seen hundreds regain their health using this type of understanding. Some years ago I founded a small group of professionals working on health recovery and antiaging issues - our members have used many techniques but the one that works best is the one described above.
