I suspect the formula is mislabeled. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang translates

as " Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction. " Because of the

nature of what it treats, this formula usually is taken as a decoction.

The " Middle " refers to the " Middle Burner (aka Heater). In this case

the Stomach and Spleen.

Bu Zhong Yi Qi is classified as a Qi tonic formula. It's for Qi

Deficiency with some cold symptoms (aversion to cold and a preference

for warm liquids). In these cases the cold symptoms aren't coming from

actual Yang Deficiency but from Yang Qi sinking. The Yang isn't

getting where it's needed. This formula is also used for prolapse of

organs due to Qi Deficiency. There may also be bleeding problems as

the Spleen also plays a role in controlling the Blood.

The reason this formula is so often taken as a decoction instead of as

a pill is because of the cold symptoms. But if the formula is helping

in pill form, I wouldn't worry. I would be curious if taking it as a

decoction would be more powerful in your case. But as long as the

pills are working satisfactory, there are certain time and convenience

factors in pills.

This formula is contraindicated when there is fever due to Yin

Deficiency. Bensky and Barolet indicate that it's not used in all

cases of prolapse, but only those due to Qi Deficiency. (Dan Bensky

and Randall Barolet, Chinese Herbal Medicine Formulas and Strategies,

p.243.)
