Since the location of Stomach 40 is being discussed so much, it's a

good idea to go into some of its uses for the members who are new to

TCM. This is a point that gets used a lot in resolving Phlegm and

Dampness and in treating asthma.

The following is taken from The Foundations of by

Giovanni Maciocia, p. 390:

" Resolves Phlegm and Damp "

" Clams astham "

" Clears Heat "

" Calms and clears the mind "

" Opens the chest "

What makes this such a particularly good point for resolving Phlegm

is that it takes care of all kinds of Phlegm throughout the body.

Maciocia lists some of the different kinds of Phlegm it takes care

of like Phlegm in the lungs, lumps under the skin, thyroid lumps,

lumps in the uterus (Phlegm which can be seen (or felt), and Phlegm

that cannot be seen like that which can " mist the mind " , causing

mental problems like phobias fears, and anxiety (when they're due to

Phlegm misting.

What makes it so good for many cases of asthma is that not only does

it help to clear Phlegm from the lungs, it also opens up the chest.

The latter is why it also gets used when the chest has been bruised

or is tight and painful from some other cause. When it's used for

painful, tight chest, it's used with Pericardium-6.

This is also a good point to clear Stomach Heat. Like when the

person has an exessive appetite due to Stomach Heat. In addition to

clearing Heat from the Stomach, it also is good for calming the

stomach.
