Could you please describe this a little more or tell me where I could

see photos of this, or if it goes by a medical name; I think it sounds

like something I have seen, and I want to look for further info.

Thanks. - Lu B.

Hi, Lu:

This is what is commonly referred to as hunchback in

the west. It's usually due to prenatal and/or

postnatal lack of nourishment, so the vertebrae don't

form correctly. My medical dictionary attributes this

to spleen deficiency.

I never saw much of this in the US, but it's fairly

common in China, and appears to be clustered around

people now in their forties. In addition to the

hunched back, there is often trouble with one or both

legs, and the entire physical body is diminished in

size.

Just a guess, but China went through the Great Leap

Forward in the early 1960's, which created widespread

famine and killed millions. A lot of people survived

by eating tree bark. This may explain why this

generation seems to have been struck with this

condition.

Regards, Jack
