Guest guest
Hi I am new to the group and my knowledge of chinese medicine is very limited! I have recently been diagnosed with cervical dysplasia and have decided to use chinese medicine to treat the 'whole problem'. I have looked through the archives and learnt a lot about this whole condition. I had my first consultation last week and my doctor said that I was suffering from Damp Heat and that my pulse was very wiry and slippery. He did go on to explain what this meant, unfortunately my brain was in overdrive and I didn't take it all in. Could someone please explain what these terms mean. Thank You Jocelyn
Guest guest
Hi, Jocelyn: What do you mean by the " whole problem? " is there more that we need to know? Guest guest
Welcome to ChinseHealing. (Amd to all the other new members.) Damp Heat is Dampness accumulation combined with Heat. Dampness also can combine with Cold, in which case it's Cold,Damp, or with Wind (Wind Damp). Or, Dampness can exist by itself. Dampness and Heat are two of the 5 " Pernicious Evils " . Dampness, Dryness, Cold, Wind, and Heat. It's easier to explain first what happens when one or more of the Pernicious Evils invade the body from the environment. What we're talking about here are people who are weather-sensitive. The person who gets arthritic pains every time the weather turns cold, wet, and/or windy. The person who has allegy-like symptoms (or actual allergies worsening) when it's windy. A person suffering from hypothermia or heat exhaustion. Etc. But Pernicious Evils invading from the outside is only part of what can happen. Pernicious Evils also can arise in the Interior (trunk, Organs) of the body due to various factors. For example, a person becoming Damp because of eating too many Damp-engendering foods like dairy and wheat. A person becoming too Hot because of eating too many warming foods or herbs. All foods and healing substances have what is called " thermal energy " . They will either warm the body, cool the body, or have no effect. Hot, Warm, Neutral, Cool, and Cold are the range of thermal energy. Heat problems can also arise because of other things. Like Qi Stagnation or blockage. Qi is warming in nature, and is supposed to flow smoothly and evenly throughout the body. When there is a blockage, Heat will build up behind that blockage. Qi Stagnation can arise from variousa causes. TCM healers can tell a lot more from a pulse than allopathic doctors can. " A Slippery pulse feels smooth, rounded, slippery to the touch, as if it were oily. It slides under the fingers. " Clinical significance: The Slippery pulse indicates Phlegm, Dampness, retention of food or pregnancy. " (Giovanni Maciocia, The Foundations of , p. 168.) Wiry pulse: " This pulse feels taut like a guitar sting. It is thinner, more taut and harder than the Tight pulse. The Wiry pulse really hits the fingers. " Clinical significance: The Wiry pulse can indicate three different conditions: Liver disharmony, Pain, Phlegm. " (p. 169.) When your TCM healer checked your pulse, he probably was checking both wrists at the same time, and 3 points on each wrist. He also was varying pressure on the 6 points, checking what the pulse felt like with light pressure and with heavier pressure.
