Guest guest
Thanks so much to Joyce, Marcos and Victoria for your very thoughtful and helpful responses to my last complaining e-mail. I really appreciate the input and feel I get more out the responses on this great list than my doctor. Victoria, I can't believe you aren't a practitioner. I was going to ask where you practiced and make an appointment. I also can't believe you picked up on the Mono possibility just from my message, when my doctor who's examined me in person for months, never mentioned it. I never brought it up to him as I'd pretty much forgotten that I had it twice as a teenager, and didn't think it was relevant. Anyway, yes I will definitely ask my GP for the test. Also I've heard that when you have a virus and take antibiotics, they can essentially chase it deeper into the body, eventually into the blood, and then it gets into the construction of the body. My TCM doctor has never mentioned this, and I'm wondering if that may be what happened to me, and I just never realized what aspects of Mono might still be lurking in my blood. Would a western monospot test reveal this, or is it more a TCM concept? Just to recap, my main complaint is depression, and I was diagnosed with kidney and spleen qi deficiency with phlegm. My herb formula for the last month contained what the doctor described as three " heavily sedating herbs, among other things. " I didn't really feel sedated, just completely exhausted, and thought he could maybe lower the dose, or swap one for something else that might be more helpful. When I suggested it, saying I wasn't feeling any better, he said I should find another doctor. Ok, thanks. I did have an acupuncture treatment as well, this time a back treatment which I've always heard were stronger than front treatments and had been asking him to do one for several months. He said he would do the four strongest points on the body and they were in my palms and middle of the bottom of my feet. I think that's kidney 1, but I'm sorry, I don't remember what the others are called. He said with a shen disturbance I would be very conscious of the pain these points apparently cause a more normal person, but they didn't really bother me any more than any other points. He was surprised it didn't hurt, and since I'm quitting anyway, I guess he figured he might as well go for broke. I've never felt any difference after a treatment before, and was shocked that this time I did. Driving home, all the tension and tightness in my upper back was completely gone. It was one of those things that become conspicuous by its absence. I was stunned how different my upper back felt, and (aside from the upset of a doctor quitting) I am feeling a bit better emotionally today. I thought nine months of treatment was a long enough time to start to feel better, but he only now finally gave me a prognosis, and says it could take " years and years. " So maybe I'm right on target if I'm only nine months into years and years of treatment, and not just nine months into what should take a year and a half. In that case, I don't know why he wants to give up, just when I start to feel something beneficial. Anyway, aside from the question about the Mono test if it's gone into the construction of my body, may I also please ask about these four " strongest points " and what that means? It may have been some of the other points as well, or just the back treatment in general that helped, but since nothing else has helped up to now, I'd like to know as much as possible about what may have happened. Are back treatments known for helping patients who have been treatment- resistant to other methods? I want to have another treatment like this, or at least get a diagram of what he did, and take it to someone else if he doesn't want to see me again. Again, sorry this is so long, and thanks so much as always for you help! Linda
Guest guest
Here is some general info on mono: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsConditions/Mononucleosiscc.html Note the reference to folic acid deficiency. This article is just a general intro to some of the alternative treatments for mono. It doesn't go into all of the herbal and mineral recommendations for mono. A, C, zinc, and magnesium can be very helpful in battling infections. It was large dosages of vitamin A which got rid of the swollen lymph nodes and pharyngitis for me. (Plus got rid of the brain fog.) The section on Chinese medicine treatment doesn't mention the 6 stages of Cold-Induced Illnesses. It would be best to do additional research on this. The page mentions several herbs used in TCM, but mentions the way American medicine would use them. Some of the herbs are Qi tonic herbs and work on the Spleen to strengthen it. Others are Heat- clearing herbs. You may also want to check the website acupressure.com. Click on the articles section. There are two sample chapters from the book Acupressure's Potent Points, and I believe one of them is the chapter on helping the immune system. If you do have mono and want to use acupressure and/or massage, you want to be careful in the area of the spleen (left side) and liver (right side of body under rib cage). The reaon you want to be very careful is because the spleen and liver can swell when a person has mono. The spleen can rupture.

I've never seen them callen 'four strongest points' as there are plenty of other candidates for that, maybe it refers to 'strong effect'. Now it is interesting that these points(k1, Pc8, Ht8) are all reducing in excess yang and empty-fire, bringing down excess yang. And Kd1 has a nurturing effect on Liver(Wood)yin (which rules tendons). Spleen qi deficiency can be brought about by excess of Liver qi, in this case yang of the liver, since there is probably a def.of yin of liver together(and resultant of)def. of kidney yin. Kd1 is an interesting choice for that, and the others take care of the empty-fire, plus the back-shu to nurture the zang-fu(organs and viscera) and you got a good combination!
