I have a friend who has a crack the size of a crater down the center of his

tongue. I remember being told that this is indicative of some health issues,

but I can't remember which - is there anyway someone could give me a reminder?

Thanks.

Stomach Yin Deficiency, and in more advanced cases, Kidney Yin

Deficiency. In cases of Stomach Yin Deficiency, the crack is

confined to the Stomach area of the tongue. As the Stomach Yin

Deficiency gets worse and worse and leads to Kidney Yin Deficiency,

the crack gets longer and longer. In cases of Kidney Yin

Deficiency, the crack can reach to the tip of the tongue.

For those new to TCM: Part of a proper TCM diagnosis is a tongue

diagnosis. The healer can tell a lot from things like the color of

the tongue tissue, if the tongue is swollen or shriveled, the

condition and color of the tongue coating (if any is present),

cracks in the tongue (those running from side to side as well as

those running up and down the middle of the tongue like in this

example), etc. Certain areas of the tongue tend to correlate to

Organs in the body. For example, the tip of the tongue can reveal

things about the Lungs and Heart. If the tip of the tongue is

redder than the rest of the tongue, suspect Heat in the Heart and/or

Lungs. The middle of the tongue often will reveal things about the

Stomach. The back of the tongue near the root of the tongue, the

Kidneys. The sides, the Liver and Gall Bladder.
