Guest guest
> Can someone explain the difference between the primary organ meridians and > the eight extraordinary meridians? This is just the basic information. Hopefully some of the list members who work with the 8 Extraordinary Meridians can add more detailed information. The 12 primary Organ meridians are Liver, Gall Bladder, Heart, Small Intestine, Pericardium, Triple Burner, Spleen, Stomach, Lungs, Large Intestine, Kidneys, and Bladder. Most acupuncture and acupressure treatment is done using these. Of the 8 Extraordinary Meridians, the two best known ones are the Directing Vessel, aka Conception Vessel, aka Ren, and the Governing Vessel, aka Du. Ren is the Yin meridian running up the midpoint of the front of the body. The Du is the Yang meridian that runs up the middle of the back of the body, into the brain, up to the top of the head, and down the front of the face to the upper lip. Points on the Ren and Du get used a lot in acupressure and acupuncture. The other 6 of the 8 EMs don't have any points specific to them. They flow through points on various Organ meridians. The EMs flow through areas that the 12 Organ meridians don't. The EMs also provide a type of overflow and lock and damn system. Say for example that one of the main meridians has become blocked and there is too much Qi built up and not moving. Some of that Excess can be shunted off to one of the EMs. Likewise, if there is Deficiency, Qi can be brought in from one of the EM to a main meridian. The EMs serve to equalize Qi flow. A note to those new to TCM: Common English words and names of TCM Organs often are capitalized because they have special meaning in TCM. The TCM Organ the Kidneys is not equivalent to the anatomical kidneys. If the name of an Organ is capitalized, it's the TCM concept of the Organ. If the name of the organ is not capitalized, it's the anatomical organ which is being discussed. Victoria
