Guest guest
Hi All, I have a friend who has had no period for more than one year. She cannot distinguish whether it is menopause or amenorrhea. She is now 48 years old. She used to have excessive menses. She likes vegetarian diet very much and is now thin and pale. Also, she has declining eyesight and begins to have the problem of hair loss. She often feels very tired. She has taken some qi ju di huang wan. It helps strengthen her energy a bit but cause no effect about her period. On the other hand, she also feels there are tumors in her breasts. Since she is a reiki master, she did a lot of reiki healing for herself and finds that the tumor is becoming smaller and smaller. She would like to try herbal treatment but she is now staying in Richmond, VA where she doesn't know she can buy herbs or herbal extracts. So, could anyone tell me where she can buy herbs of reasonable price in Richmond? Any advice or comment about her condition? Thanks in advance. Guest guest
I believe there is now an OTC test kit in the US that women can buy to see if they are menopausal. I assume that she also has consulted a MD or DO about the problems she is having. With the multiple problems that you list, it's recommended that she see someone trained in TCM for a proper diagnosis and treatment. It's hard enough to directly advise someone via email. In this case, the questions aren't coming from the person needing the help but via a 3rd-person. That makes me worry that she wouldn't do the necessary research and questioning to choose a formula that would help and wouldn't hurt. I know there is an acupuncturist in Blacksburg, VA which is to the SW of where she is and a fairly quick trip down an interstate highway. But I don't know if the Blacksburg healer is trained in TCM. Your friend also might want to check the yellow pages of the Roanoke phone book under " acupuncture " , " alternative medicine " , " herbs " , etc. Also, area health food stores may be a source of info if there are any TCM healers in Roanoke. > She is now 48 years old. She used to have excessive menses. > She likes vegetarian diet very much and is now thin and pale. > Also, she has declining eyesight and begins to have the problem > of hair loss. She often feels very tired. She has taken some > qi ju di huang wan. It helps strengthen her energy a bit but > cause no effect about her period. For those on the list who are new to TCM and for beginning students, qi ju di huang wan is lycium fruit, chrysanthemum, and rehmannia pill. It's a Yin Tonic formula, particularly good for Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency. (Who placed her on this formula? Has she seen a TCM healer in the past? Are there symptoms and signs of Kidney and/or Liver Yin Deficiency?) Is she getting enough to eat? Women on starvation diets will cease having periods. They also lose hair. From a TCM standpoint, it's important to remember that the Spleen plays a major role in both Qi (roughly translated as energy) and Blood formation. When the complexion is pale, suspect Qi Deficiency, Yang Deficiency (the paleness is very pronounced), and/or Blood Deficiency. If it's Qi Deficiency and particularly Yang Deficiency, the complexion will be shiny pale. If it's Blood Deficiency, the complexion will be dull pale. Also check for signs and symptoms of Yang Deficiency. Are there any symptoms of Yang Deficiency like aversion to cold, having trouble warming up, reluctance to drink liquids and a preference for hot soups when one does drink, large amounts of very pale urine, etc.? I bring this up because if a person is on a Yin formula or herb for any lenght of time or doesn't need the formula or herb, Yin tonic formulas and herbs can trigger a relative Yang Deficiency. Yang Deficiency fatigue is the most crushing fatigue of all. Any of the Deficiencies can manifest as fatigue - Blood Deficiency, Qi Deficieny, Yin Deficiency, or Yang Deficiency - but Yang Deficiency fatigue is the most extreme. In the case of Yin Deficiency fatigue, the fatigue is somewhat mild. Yin cools, calms, and moistens. People who are Yin Deficient tend to be aggitated and somewhat nervous. In Yin Deficiency one frequently sees a person who can't sit still even though s/he is tired. One also wants to check if the fatigue is due to Excess instead of Deficiency. In other words, check to make sure that the person isn't overdoing physically. In cases of Deficiency, one supplements what the person lacks. In cases of Excess, one takes away what one has too much of. One cuts back on one's activities. (Note: Dampness - which is classified as an Excess problem - also can, in some cases result in fatigue. One dries Dampness in order to treat it. Keepy in mind in this case that the person is on a Yin Tonic formula, and Yin cools, calms, and moistens.) In TCM, when one hears that the eyes are involved, automatically suspect Liver involvement and rule in or rule out. Note that chrysanthemum is an herb that frequently is used for eye problems. A TCM healer also will need more info than " eye problems " . There are a number of eye problems. Too dry, near-sighted, far- sighted, " floaters " (dark spots in the field of vision), etc. Floaters in particular point to a conditon called Liver Blood Deficiency. Some people simply cannot handle a vegetarian diet. Is she pure vegetarian or is she consuming some dairy and/or eggs? Vitamin B12 deficiency is a common problem among some vegetarians, especially the pure vegetarians or even the ones who eat dairy but not eggs. (I know about this because my husband was lacto-vegetarian for some years, but had to give it up because of eye problems and some other problems.) Also, from a Western standpoint, a deficiency of B12 can result in higher than normal amounts of missphapen, rigid red blood cells being produced. They are called " nondiscocytes " and have trouble making it through the smallest capillaries, resulting in a number of problems including but not limited to many of the symptoms of Blood Deficiency in TCM. In TCM, when a healer hears " hair loss " , one automatically suspects and rules in or rules out a Kidney imbalance. Are there other general symptoms of Kidney imbalance like pain in the back (particularly the lower back), weak and sore knees, abnormal urination (too much, too little, too frequent, incontinence, too dark, too pale, etc.)? Problems with the ears and/or hearing also point to the possibility of Kidney imbalance. (Most of these are general Kidney imbalance symptoms, and won't tell the healer which particular Kidney imbalance. From a Western standpoint, magnesium deficiency can result in hair loss. American diets are notoriously deficient in Mg. Thyroid problems also can result in loss of hair. Hyperthyroidism is among the medical conditions that can result in a woman's periods ceasing. Hyperthyroidism, like hypothyroidism, can result in fatigue though the fatigue of the hyperthyroidism isn't as great as that of hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is another case of the person being too agitated to rest properly. One also checks for bulging eyes in hyperthyroidism, though this particular sign may appear somewhat later in cases of hyperthyroidism if at all. Excessive blood loss - including that from excessive periods - also can result in Blood Deficiency if it goes untreated long enough. > On the other hand, she also feels there are tumors in her > breasts. Since she is a reiki master, she did a lot of reiki > healing for herself and finds that the tumor is becoming smaller > and smaller. In cases of lumps in the breast, suspect and rule in or rule out Liver and Liver meridian involvement. The Liver meridian runs through this area. Tumors in TCM can be due to Qi Stagnation, Blood Stasis, and/or Phlegm accumulation. The tumors or lumps of Qi Stagnation will wax and wane in size. They also will appear and disappear in different places. Those of Blood Stasis and/or Phlegm are more fixed in location and size. (But the fact that she's a reiki master means that she could be shrinking Blood Stasis tumors and/or Phlegm accumulations, so don't rule those imbalances out yet. More questioning is needed.) The best healing often comes from a combination of approaches. Victoria
Guest guest
Whoops. My mistake. I was thinking Roanoke, VA, and you said Richmond, VA. So forget about the Blacksburg recommendation. Richmond is the capitol of Virginia, and a fairly large city so she should be able to find someone there. Also, it is not too far from Washington, DC to the east and the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area to the southeast. Both of those areas are sure to have TCM healers. Richmond probably does too given its size. I believe at least one acupuncturist on this list is in the Virginia Beach area. Also, the ARE (psychic Edgar Cayce organization) is located at Virginia Beach. (I've tried out some of the Cayce recommendations for various problems, and they DO work. Especially the recommendation of using salt and vinegar packs to elimiate bruising, which from a TCM standpoint is one example of Blood Stasis.) Again, my apologies. Guest guest
Hi Fanny, Have to see the cause of the interruption of her periods. Do exams; no good to shoot in the dark and just take some herbs to see if she will get better, have to see what is happenning, the cause! And maybe she should seriously consider reworking her diet, include some meat could help with her energy and blood.
