Guest guest
Do you have access to a book called AnimalWise by Ted Andrews? Gorilla is on page 199. A quick looks tells me key qualities are strength, nobility and generosity. There are at least two pages of writing on this and there are other apes as well. Michelle - Ellen Scusa Chinese Traditional Medicine Saturday, February 21, 2004 10:15 AM [Chinese Traditional Medicine] Gorilla as a totem???? I believe that my totem animal may be a ape, gorilla. But I don't see it as part of the totem animal listing's. I want more information on it. How likley that this is my totem animal although not common? Does anyone know any information about the gorilla as a totem and where can I find it? Not a monkey, I do see that when I look around but a actuall ape or gorilla of some kind. Not too sure. There in my dreams constantly. I even become half ape in my dreams. I do not have any association with gorilla's in my wakening life to make me dream about them. I have been searching for my spirit guide and totem animal for some time and have asked that they come to me in a dream. Gorilla's is what I get. Soooooo, if any one know's I would greatlty appreciate any info. Because I cannot find any. Hi Ellen, My training in traditional Chinese medicine enables me to answer a few questions that come up on this list, but your question isn't really TCM as far as I can tell. Still, I'm intrigued by your dreams. A few things: TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) doesn't really have totem animals. There are a few animals that show up in Chinese mythology that has made its way into TCM a bit here and there such as the definition of armpit odor which is described as " fox smell " or something like that. Foxes are an important animal in Chinese mythology. But no spirit guides or totems to my knowledge. Next, totems are unique to American indians (again, I'm not an expert in these things, so pardon my ignorance) and probably do not include gorillas or apes in their pantheon of animal spirits because apes and gorillas are not seen in North America (all of the Americas?) outside of zoos and California single's bars. Still, you're having some interesting dreams and I would encourage you to look at the appearance of gorillas, apes, or half human half ape animals as yourself. It might be interesting to replace the word " Ellen " for " ape " whenever it comes up in a dream. Perhaps that would provide some insight into your own personal symbols and dream metaphors. The half-man/half horse animals of Greek mythology for instance represented the half animal/ half divine nature of human beings. Perhaps your half ape/half human dream animals are pointing to a similar experience. For instance, do the apes in your dreams do things that you would like to do, but can't because they're against the law, unethical, or immoral? If so, I'd go take a nap and have some fun. Then get up and get on with your more socially responsible life. : ) -- Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. -Adlai Stevenson

Guest guest
Often totem animals are powerful archetypes with healing potential. They sometimes represent qualities the person has but has suppressed, been afraid of, or failed to appreciate or develop. The appearance of the totem animal often marks that the person has reached an important crossroads in his or her life and is ready to grow as well as heal in some way. The book Black Elk Speaks has some references to this type of healing.

Guest guest
Hi Ellen, I think it is very likely that Gorilla is your totem...at least at this time. Also, if you are dreaming repeatedly of it, Gorilla is trying to get your attention; has something important for you right now. That one link had a lot of Ted Andrews " Animal Speak " stuff on it, but I still would highly recommend the companion volume of Ted Andrews, " Animal-Wise " since it actually has gorilla in it. Both are the best volumes I've come across for totems. Michelle - Ellen Scusa Chinese Traditional Medicine Saturday, February 21, 2004 10:15 AM [Chinese Traditional Medicine] Gorilla as a totem????
