I second the ice recommendation. When my back flares up, icing it is the thing

that helps the most.

I also go along with the answers from Mike and lillisilly, ice is the only way

to go with inflamation, no heat!!.

I don't know how to address the hernia problem, but for back, neck, knee, hand,

any joint problem, I've had excellent results not only in pain relief but actual

healing with infrared lamps, LED's, and also neodymium magnets. I had neck

problems for years, from whiplash, then it was getting much worse and I was

getting shooting pains with slight movement and numbing sensations, then I spent

a couple of hours lying on my face with an infrared heat lamp, 100 watt ceramic

for warming reptiles, shining on it at 12 " or less, and it totally eliminated

the problem! I've also had knuckles injured in gardening and very painful, even

with something sticking out when moved, get totally healed in a day or two

shining my LED (IR 880 nm, Red 660 nm, Blue ~ 400-500 nm) on it a few hours

while sleeping a couple of nights, and wearing a neo magnet on it for one night.

I also have experienced much better joint health since taking Colloidal

minerals, Boron, and Magnesium for the last 15 years during which time my back

has not gone out one time whereas I had a problem several times before that at a

younger age. I work hard in the garden so stress my back, neck and hands

particularly. I've also had better joints since becoming a vegetarian except

for dairy, and occasional eggs and fish, and doing most of the Budwig diet. I

also used MSM in a high dose, like 2-3 tbsp a day swished in the mouth, with

great results for joint problems.

Nancy,

I experienced several automobile rear end collisions over 8 years.

Nope, not my fault, there's.

Didn't help the cars!

Nor me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was going to very experienced chiropractors , that I really trusted.

I had some relief, but not to the point I was happy.

And not to the point the adjustments lasted.

THEN I discovered the St. John Method.

It's a massage technique that releases the muscle memory of the accident.

Now, I have to warn all reading this post, the method is VERY painful.

YOWWWWWWWWWWWWW

I wanted to punch the therapist out! Thump!

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't had any pain since 2000.

And my "military" neck is normal.

So look around for someone you can go to.

Rich- You didn't seem to read the part of my post where it said the IR heat lamp

eliminated my problem. My neck is great. I do a lot of yard work though since

I have 2 acres with lots of weeds and blackberry vines, so I have an ongoing

challenge on my hands and back from the work, but I've been so much better on

Colloidal minerals etc, and lately the Budwig diet and vegetarian diet.
