Guest guest
As a long term survivor I thought I was paying close attention to everything..... Woops, not true. I have used a Sperti Vitamin D lamp for some time (at twice recommended dosage) and during the winter took 1,000 i.u's of Vitamin D daily in form of cod liver oil. Add to this, daily sunning sessions w/o shirt or sunscreen during the summers. Imagine my surprise when a recent Vitamin D 25-hydroxy test showed me deficient in Vitamin D. Seems many older folks with a history of cancer and chemotherapy have great difficulty absorbing Vitamin D. I'm now doing all the foregoing and taking 10,000 i.u.'s D3 daily to get my Vitamin D 25-hydroxy level at or above 70 ng/ml. This Vitamin D level is now accepted as desirable for disease prevention. Get up to date by watching the latest Vitamin D videos from the University of California, San Diego Medical School. You will be as surprised as I was by what they show. http://www.ucsd.tv/series/index.asp?show=show & seriesnumber=520 You can also get tested for Vitamin D 25-hydroxy at home. Guest guest
Make sure it is Vitamin D-3 that is being consumed and not D-2. I have found that using a liquid emulsified form of D-3 gets good test results. I have noticed on a couple of forums that those taking Vitamin D-3 in capsule form do not seem to get good test results. It is a good idea to take it with food. One should take the higher levels (at least 5,000 IU) for at least three-four months before re-testing. Be sure to eat a lot of spinach with your vitamin D. To work properly, Vitamin D needs magnesium, vitamin K, zinc and probably boron. Hume EM, et al. LII. On the absorption of vitamin D from the skin. Biochem J. 1927, 21:362-367. Gaylor JL, Sault FM. Localization and biosynthesis of 7-dehydrocholesterol in rat skin. J Lipid Res. 1964,5(3):422-31. The two studies above raise the possibility that sunbathing or using UV lights may not produce much Vitamin D if you shower with soap after exposure. Water cleans the body but does not destroy as much sebum, human body oil. Vitamin D-3 can also help to get the gut healthy. Guest guest
Yes, one can get too much D-3 and certainly not every needs added D-3. Before supplementing with any type of hormone, it is always best to get your levels tested first. However, if you have cancer, it is very likely that D-3 levels are low. Guest guest
We just started taking the pill form of Vit D3. I recently succumbed to a cold that has been making the rounds and when I upped my D3 the symptoms subsided. DD started to get this cold and we upped her D3 and she is not going the way the rest did. BUT she does feel a bit of headache and nausea. Not sure if it is: A.) a bit of the virus still in her system B.) environmental---she is apprenticing with a theatre group in a school setting every afternoon and this is when and where she feels this way, though it hangs on for a few hours C.) reaction to a slight sunburn she acquired a few days ago D.) reaction to the upped doses of D3---only tripled her usual dosage of 500 iu a day. What do you think, all? Jill~
Guest guest
From what I have learned from Dr Marcola, it depends on how much sun you get in the northern parts of the US you need more vitamin D 3 than in the southern part of the US, grown ups can take as much as 10,000 IU and the younger can take 4 or five thousand IU's. I think 400 is RDA from the fifties, which is way low. He says that if you are naked sitting in the noon sun, for a half hour you will produce 150,000 units of Vitamin D.
