Guest guest Posted March 25, 2009 Report Share Posted March 25, 2009 Where did you read that? I have never heard of an issue with GMO oleander, either in plants or seeds. The most serious issue with oleander is to make sure you get the plants from an organic nursery or other source where you can be sure that no pesticides have been used. While there are many oleander cultivars which have been created by cross breeding through cross pollination, I am not aware of any oleander varieties that have been created in a lab via gene splicing, radiation and other such means. In general, I have no problem with cross-bred plants of just about any kind created via cross-pollination, since the same could easily happen in nature. The most frequent pesticide used in commercial nurseries is Malathion, which can be detected by a tingling sensation/numbness when the finished extract is placed on the lips. When such happens, discard the extract and start over with new plants. Malathion does have a very short half-life and, though I am not recommending it, some people have taken commercial plants or other plants they are not sure of and placed them in a container and flushed them with plenty of water for a few weeks as well as spraying and wiping them to flush any possible pesticides In northern climes, oleander is frequently grown as a container plant and brought inside during the winter months - much as it is done throughout Europe.
