You can gather a lot of information yourself by doing a google search of " DCA "

and " cancer " .

The drug looked very promising at first, both in petri dishes and in lab mice.

Drug companies would not fund human trials, however. But the people up at the

University of Alberta gathered a couple of million from private donations and

forged ahead. (They are still working on these).

There is a website (I believe it is the dcasite.org or something like that)

where some doctors and patients are discussing their results of taking DCA.

These results don't look so good. Yes, there are some patients who have had

remissions, but apparently many don't -- not like the rats did!

There are whole protocols surrounding taking DCA -- drinking lots of black tea

and taking lots of B1 vitamins, I think... But in reading this website, it looks

like a " one bullet " approach to me.

And be careful -- DCA has side effects too.

Go ahead and check it out on the web. Maybe others can chime in. I believe our

friend Mike Golden knows a fair amount about this drug. Hopefully he can add

his two cents.

I was initially intrigued by DCA but the more I checked the less

impressed I was. Positive results in mice have not transferred over to

humans as far as I can tell and in the final analysis it is an unnatural

drug with side effects.

It is not something I would recommend or take myself.

On the one hand, the attitude around the DCA site seems to be "Let's roll up our sleeves and figure this out ourselves!" I totally understand this and even admire what people are doing. On the other hand, DCA is a perfect example of how something can look promising in early phases, then sort of fizzle. Not fail entirely, just fizzle. There are a number of remissions on DCA, too many to be due to chance. The latest take is that the successful ones had the greatest consumption of caffeine, especially of black tea. How they chose that one thing to look at I'm not sure. Anyway, a similarly reported, university originated potential "cure" with a backstory having some similarities to DCA might be 3-bromopyruvate.

This one can kill cancer cells, even whole tumors, in animals within minutes of a single arterial application. It might even work intravenously. It sounds good because it stops glycolysis briefly. Loss of glycolysis means death to cancer cells. Like DCA, 3-bromopyruvate is currently tied up in academic bickering, or, at least, that's the cover story. In reality it's as cheap as dirt so it will probably never see the light of day.

And then there's that macrophage stimulating factor that counters nagalase......don't get me started.

The next obvious question is --

How can one get his or her hands on this dirt-cheap substance?

(3-bromopyruvate)?

And the followup is:

Why would anyone want to?

Well, the 100% success rate in the limited laboratory experiment sure caught my

attention.

You can get 3-bromopyruvateover the web but you cannot find oral dosage information because it cannot be taken orally. See:

http://scienceblogs.com/terrasig/2007/04/at_the_risk_of_promoting_anoth.php

"3-BrPA is a great experimental tool but it cannot be taken orally"

and

"3-bromopyruvate, or 3-bromopyruvic acid (3-BrPA), is an inhibitor of an enzyme called hexokinase II. Hexokinase II is required for the first step of using glucose as a substrate to make ATP and or lactate. Unfortunately, 3-BrPA will inhibit both glycolysis and normal oxidative phosphorylation (the latter resulting from its complexing with ATP synthase), requiring that the drug be injected directly into the artery that feeds the tumor, and still at very high concentrations (5 mM)."

I understand - it caught mine too. But it did not translate to humans, as is too often the case with rodent studies. It makes for a good marketing tool for fundraising though.

The bottom line to me is that DCA is a man-created drug complete with side effects and I have seen no evidence whatsoever that it would be beneficial to use when there are so many natural and alternative items that are safer and more effective.
