Do you know the cause of the cough? It's better to treat the cause than the symptoms, if possible. Also, here's a good recipe for elderberry/clove syrup: Add enough water to cover the berries and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain through muslin. Add 1 lb (450 g) of sugar and 10 cloves for each 6 dl (1 pint) of juice. Heat the juice gently and stir in the sugar until dissolved. Boil for 10 minutes and leave until cold. Bottle and keep refrigerated for use neat or as a cordial (hot or cold) for colds, flu etc. You should be able to get elderberries at Whole Foods. I just got two pounds in, I'm making extracts and syrups for friends for the winter. Elderberries contain the active ingredient sambucin that is now being touted by OTC marketers for its ability to control viral infections. Not saying you have one, but elderberries are great for fighting colds and flu.http://member.newsguy.com/~herblady
Guest guest
So sorry you are having such a hard time. There are some good suggestions of home made herbs, I'm sure...but with your doctors permission (since you are pregnant), I would go to the pharmacy like Rexall or Eckerd, etc. and ask for Barkley's Cough Syrup. It is from Canada and all natural ingredients. Someone once told me it was the best. IT IS THE BEST AS IT WILL STOP ANY COUGH NO MATTER HOW BAD, DEAD IN IT'S TRACKS! But be forewarned (to me)it is the absolutely the worst taste I've ever had!!! And I've taken some pretty rank tasting homemade preps. Guest guest
Forgot to mention the best little cough drops in existance -- Thayer's Slipperly Elm Cough Drops. They're at WF, too, about $2. Work incredibly well. http://member.newsguy.com/~herblady
Guest guest
When I am having a bad cough, I make a syrup out of Raisins, water, licorice root and anise seed. It works wonders. It really soothes the throat. After taking the syrup (of any kind really) try not to drink anything or you will wash the syrup off so to speak. -Jennifer

Their advertisement is based on the saying " It tastes awful but it works! " I can honestly say that I am not sure myself if it does work cause the stuff tastes so awful, I am not sure how one gets it down their throat to know if it works or not. But I do have friends that have used it and said that it really does taste awful but it REALLY DOES work. Guest guest
Hi Anya thanks for the suggestion, I think I have the cough because I have the Flu, but the only thing is that normally with a flu the cough is wet, and mine is dry so I'm wondering if I need to change my A/C filter and invest in an air purifier since I have 3 indoor cats, and a Beagle. I'm going to take a drive up to Whole Foods this weekend and buy some elderberries. Guest guest
THANKS to all for your wonderful suggestions about my cough. You guys are great that's why I love this group. I feel a bit better today, I tried some hot lemonade with honey last night before bed and that seemed to help a bit. Marlen
Guest guest
I started with a bad cough about 4 weeks ago, it took about 3 weeks to get rid of it, now it's back again. What would be the best way to get rid of it? I really don't like going to doctors; they just load you up with drugs. I need help fast, my stomach and chest are killing me every time I cough from coughing so much. Thank You.
Guest guest
Advanced Colloidal Silver or Advanced Ionic Silver and plenty of it taken internally and a lesser amount sprayed and breathed into the lungs through a nebulizer. If you do not have any on hand, then use whatever colloidal silver you can find until you can order some of the good stuff. ClearLungs - the combination of it and silver were the only things that worked for me when I had a really bad cough and congestion. Guest guest
Hi Tony & , Hope you had a great weekend enjoying the outdoors like you spoke of doing. I keep my gallon bottle of Colloidal Silver in the garage, it is getting mighty cold now this time of year...should I bring it in? I remember you and saying on a number of occasions that CS can get pretty warm and be alright, but not cold, how cold is cold, cannot remember if you specified? Thanks! Guest guest
Clear Lungs sounds like great stuff. I'm already doing both the silvers and the CG, so I'm good... hoping I can keep all the typical winter illnesses at bay. Better to arm ourselves, prevention is key, right! Raw organic honey would probably be even better...hasn't got all the good stuff cooked out of it. Guest guest
If you have thyme in the garden, make a tea & sweeten with honey.Elderberry syrup is good. You can probably get one at a local food store that is made locally.Sambucol, the Israeli one is very expensive but good. Some varieties have artificial sweetener so leave them on the shelf.Horseradish (or even ordinary radishes) is excellent and so is the herb horehound - both will need honey.Chicken soup is good, not battery farmed chicken though.. Put lots of parsley in it.Chickweed, comfrey and red clover are usually plentiful. Teas Grapefruit juice & blackberry juice are good.Hope you find relief soon!Maracuja ...___
Guest guest
Slight typo - manuka honey is great - if you can get it with UMF15+ or more - the higher the number the more healing "factor" available. Mix it with any of the herbs mentioned - let teas cool enough not to cook the honey.Maracuja--- On Mon, 12/8/08, Tony wrote:Tony Re: bad cougholeander soup Date: Monday, December 8, 2008, 5:05 PM Advanced Colloidal Silver or Advanced Ionic Silver and plenty of it taken internally and a lesser amount sprayed and breathed into the lungs through a nebulizer.
