Orthonine, Where I tried that from Dr. Hulda Clarkes advice and my god when I was experiencing those problems did that ever help. i am not sure why it worked but it did.

You can try GABA powder mixed with a drop of DMSO if you wake around 1:00. If that works but you wake up again later try the 3 mg melatonin again mixed with a drop or two of DMSO.

Lora,

I use Dr. Christopher's Relax-Eze formula. I don't have a chronic problem, but when I cannot relax and having trouble falling asleep I use this. I take two capsules and sleep soundly for at least 7-8 hours. I have no side effects. I wake up feeling rested.

Here's the website. Check under formulas.

Hi Lora,

Do you know Why you do not sleep. So often the

" symptoms " are addressed in an attempt to aleviate the

distresss, and not the cause. That everyone has

occassional insomnia is common. However, a life long

pattern, which you seem to have developed is not.

best regards,

Hi,

Thank you all for the wonderful advice. No, I am not on estrogen. I took it initally for a couple of months to help with hot flashes and haven't taken it for years. I'll try a few things and let you know what works.

Have you had your thyroid checked? I was at the point

where you are now until I found out that my thyroid

was low. I am on thyroid meds (although I would love

to eventually get everything working without meds) and

they have saved my life. I now sleep through the

night. If you get it checked, make sure they check

Free T3 and Free T4 - most won't check these and this

is what will tell you if you are actually low in these

hormones. The TSH and T4 tests that are usually done

won't give you the complete picture. If it is your

thyroid, you can try natural ways to boost it.

Lora,

I like to vary the use of insomnia herbs, rarely taking the same

thing every night (like melatonin). I think the body

somehow " adapts " to the same herb taken all the time. Here is a list

of some herbs I have found to be effective:

Valerian

Chamomile

Kava Kava

Hulda Clark turned me on to Ornithine, which I have also found to be

excellent.

Some of my absolute favorites are the TCM formulas:

Gui Pi Tang

Suan Tsao Ren Tang

An Mien Shen

These are all available at a Chinese Market. There seems to be one

in every town these days.

Some of the best Chinese (single) herbs for inducing sleep are

Red Sage Root (Dan Shen)

Thin-leaf Milkwort Root (Yuan Zhi) .... one of my favorites...

Sour Jujube Seed (Suan Zao Ren)

According to TCM, restlessness at night indicates excessive Yang,

which needs to be balanced with some Yin. You are somehow out of

balance if you can't sleep properly. Indeed, you are out of balance

if you are sick in any way. The very meaning of the word disease is

dis-ease, not at ease, which is what is going on when you can't

sleep, you are not at ease, which can lead to more serious

manifestions of not being at ease, or dis-eased. Your quest should

be balance and harmony, in every aspect of your life. Insomnia is

related to the heart. The less sleep, the more workload for the

heart. Sometimes, the inability to sleep is symptomatic of a heart

issue.

How true. Which is why I asked Lora if she knew the

reason(s) why she cannot sleep. When the Circadian

cycle is off balance, usually, there are " other " ,

sometimes more esoteric considerations or issues that

must be explored as they directly affect, or filter

down to the physical body.

Hi Lora,

started, something happened in your life. I do not

think you are not clueless :)

The question is.....What started it, what event?

I take Melatonin 6mg every evening right before I go

to bed. My GP tried to get me to take it last year

when she heard about my wondering around in the middle

of the night. I have had trouble sleeping for years,

really as long as I can remember. Tried it with 3mg

first then decide to give it up, then this spring one

of my co-workers said it may boost my immunity after

being diagnosed with " connective tissue disorder " with

no true diagnoses yet. However, I take the melatonin

every evening just as I am going to bed, I still get

up during the night and may still wonder around, but I

do feel more rested when I do get up.

Good luck, Jeanna

Magesium is going to intensify any other herb or drug you take. When I was getting off of my buspar (anxiety drug) I would take both at time and it would knock me out!

If valerian is helping you........why would you want to add magnesium? I don't know if I would take them both at the same time.

If so, what dosage would beappropriate and are there any side effects that Ishould be careful of? Any other remedies that you canrecommend? Drink about a glass of either room temperature or slightly warm water when you get out of bed first thing in the morning. (no coffee, tea, juice, cold water --- just warm water. While standing, bring your arms straight out from your sides and bend your elbows so your hands are touching your chest. Then stand up on your toes as high as possible and drop. You should get a pretty good jolt. Drop down like this 10 times in a row. Then, while standing with your arms up, pant short quick breaths for about 15 seconds.

The warm water acts like a weight in the stomach. Being, warm, it doesn't cause the stomach to cramp. Instead, it relaxes it. Spreading your arms stretches the diaphragm and opens up that hole in the back. Dropping down on your heels jerks the stomach out of the hole and the panting tighten up the diaphragm muscle to close the hole.

If you have a hiatal hernia, you need to do this exercise every day --- not just until everything feels normal. It will also strengthen the area, and make the hiatal hernia less likely to come back.

  • 2 years later...

I've had insomnia issues for quite a while. A large part of it has no doubt been trading futures markets in the middle of the night then being unable to "turn off" my mind to go to sleep. Plus other issues.

About three months ago I started taking an herbal sleep supplement called GREAT NIGHT SLEEP. First it was version 3 then the current version 4. I don't think I noticed any results for two or three weeks but then I realized I was sleeping all night.... or at least whatever remained of the night. I now take it every night about 30-45 minutes before going to bed and FWIW my subjective experience is it works quite well. No hangover that I've noticed.

Hi Colleen,I know the devastating effects of Insomnia. I remember going days at a time without sleeping and besides driving you crazy, no it's not good for your health. Again, it's no surprise that doctors know the reason for our illness, yet never take the appropriate healing measures. Sigh. However, relying on allopathic remedies, even temporarily, has its serious drawbacks. One never knows if the person will become addicted, making it very difficult to break the cycle and they may come with their own health threatening side effects. It is best to seek a good naturopath or herbalist in times like these to help in finding a solution.Hugs,
