Diabetes Drugs Carry Heart Failure Risks

A new study finds that patients who are taking Avandia or Actos, two drugs prescribed to treat diabetes, have double the risk of developing heart failure than those who are not taking the medication.

A report published in the August issue of Diabetes Care, explains that according to this study, for every 50 patients with type-two diabetes taking these drugs, one patient will develop heart complications.

This report was published in the aftermath of a U.S. government review that was released, which found Avandia's heart risks are more problematic than Actos'.

Stronger Warning Label's Proposed

Stronger warning labels for both of the drugs have been proposed and discussed by an advisory panel that is set to meet early next week.

The current labels warn patients who are already at risk of experiencing heart problems.

The labels also warn patients that the medications will increase the possibility of heart failure when they are used with insulin.

However, according to Dr. Sonal Singh, an assistant professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, the risks are not restricted to those taking insulin but are evident in all patients.

Study Threats Continued Production of Drugs

Experts claim that the studies and concerns surrounding Avandia and Actos may prevent these drugs from being manufactured and sold in the future.

Researchers found the drugs not only increased risks, but these risks were found in both high and low doses.

The study also shows that the average time for heart failure to develop was 24 weeks after patients started taking the drug.
