Warning to Doctors and PatientsThe warning addresses various types of nonsteroidal ant inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), excluding aspirin. The AHA issued the warning to the public and health care professionals after research concluded that many of these medications increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Cox-2 inhibitors, prescription medications that are used for chronic and acute pain, are specifically targeted in the warning.Other Treatment OptionsDr. Elliot Antman, the author of the AHA’s official statement, says that Cox-2 inhibitors should only be taken as a last result when other drugs fail to treat the problem. He also suggests that before doctors immediately use medications to treat pain, they try other alternatives such as physical therapy, weight loss, and exercise. If these alternatives don’t work, Dr. Altman suggests using over the counter medications such as aspirin.(Source: Science Daily)Have you or someone you know been harmed by pain relievers?
