Please consider supporting this work with your membership!!!! Thanks. Inge - Memo from Jeffrey Smith : Dear Friends, Your donations to our Institute will be matched dollar for dollar if made by the end of the day this Thursday, November 8th. To make an online donation, please go to www.ResponsibleTechnology.org BEFORE midnight on Thursday. Membership fees of $25 will also be matched, and members receive a free copy of The GMO Trilogy—which contains 2 DVDs and a CD. Please support the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT). Why? We are working to end the genetic engineering of the food supply. With your support, we have an excellent chance to achieve this goal in the US very soon—2009 is what we are targeting. We are educating people about the health dangers of GM foods and are driving consumers to stop choosing brands with GM ingredients. When we reach the critical mass, which I call the tipping point, food companies will realize that using GM ingredients is a sales liability and will remove them. When the tipping point was reached among European shoppers, virtually all European food manufacturers vowed to remove GM ingredeints from their brands within a single week. Over the past year, we have seen a consumer-driven tipping point in the US trigger mass rejection of the genetically engineered bovine growth hormone among major sellers. Dairies, supermarket chains, even Starbucks, have vowed to stop using milk from cows treated with this controversial drug. How was this achieved? Several organizations, including ours, have been educating consumers about the health dangers, so that manufacturers realize that using the drug is a sales liability. Same strategy. GM foods are not tastier, healthier or more appealing to consumers, so the tipping point to force rejection of GM ingredients should be a pretty small percentage of the population. I am guessing that 5% or 15 million people making brand choices to avoid GMOs is more than enough to hit the tipping point in the US. We are well on our way... We helped inspire the mass cleanout of any remaining GMOs from the natural food industry, which will start in force in 2008. As part of our Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, we will place GMO Education Centers and Non-GMO Shopping Guides in natural food stores nationwide. We are also working with major health-oriented websites and magazines, who will convey the dangers of GM foods to their audience on a regular basis. For example, Mercola.com (probably the world’s largest alternative health website) has sent out an article of mine on GMO health dangers each week for 14 weeks to over 1 million rs. It is the Mercola.com Foundation that is matching donations till Thursday. We have active GM-Free School Campaigns around the country, and are reaching out to medical practitioners, religious leaders and the media. And we expect to have a film in theaters as well. Some of these campaigns have fulltime staff, others part time, and volunteers are in charge of others. We need funds to make sure we have skilled full time people in each area. If so, I believe we could easily surpass the tipping point by 2009. The receptivity to our message is huge! Although our primary focus is consumer education, I have been compelled to approach governments since the publication of my new book, Genetic Roulette, in April. It has the capacity to change policy, as it presents irrefutable, overwhelming evidence of health dangers of GMOs, in an accessible, decision-maker-friendly format. The book features 65 health risks, each in two-page spreads. The first 20 show adverse reactions, including thousands of sick, sterile, and dead livestock, thousands of toxic and allergic-type reactions in humans, and damage to virtually every organ and system studied in lab animals. The remaining 45 highlight theoretical risks, and reveal how many of the fundamental assumptions used to justify GM food safety have been overturned. Part 2 shows how government assessments are not competent to even identify most of the risks in part 1, and part 3 shows how industry research is rigged to avoid finding those problems. When I gave it to the Secretary of Agriculture in May, I said, “I wrote this book for you.” I showed him how each of the 65 risks had an executive summary on the left, written so he can scan the book quickly, and then he could give the right hand page of fully referenced detailed text to his staff to read. In addition to the accessible format, the book is a checklist on GMO safety criteria, which serves to reframe the debate. The biotech industry must present rigorous, independent data to counter each of the 65 risks. If they can, we have no health argument. If they can’t, they have no justification for keeping GM foods on the market. I have been on an exhausting schedule, getting the book to key government leaders. In May, I testified at the EPA and then visited members of Congress in Washington, including Senator Harkin, the chairman of the Agriculture Committee. I then presented at the European Parliament in Brussels and the EU Parliament office in Dublin, to parliamentarians in the UK, and UN delegates in Paris. While speaking in Cambridge University, I got a call on my cell phone from Brazil, asking me to go over on short notice for key meetings. A few days later, I left for Brazil for 72 hours, then back to Europe. (I recall that in 12 days, I was in 12 cities in 7 countries.) In October, I was invited by the Polish government to give a press conference with the environment minister, and then went to Brazil again for more presentations. I leave this week for Australia, where I present to parliamentarians throughout the nation, hoping to convince them to maintain their state moratoria on planting GM crops—which expires in 2008. After traveling on to meetings in Asia, I get back to my home in Iowa for some needed rest. In addition to my trips overseas, in the last 6 months I have presented at major conferences all over US, including to the National Association of College and University Food Service directors, the American Association of Anti-Aging Medicine, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, the National Naturopathic College, several conferences for natural foods retailers, Bioneers, and many many others. Also, recent contributions have allowed us to hire a new managing director, who makes sure that momentum in the US does not slow down when I am on the road. In addition to needing funds to hire staff for our demographic targets and projects, we need to mount a rapid action campaign to stop the commercial planting of GM sugar beets, scheduled for the spring. I realize this is short notice, but if it is at all possible for you to make a donation on our website before the end of the day on Thursday, it will have double the impact. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Jeffrey M. SmithExecutive Director

Guest guest
Several things apparently have caused the "bees are dying". One thing was that we had killer bees coming into the US and I remember reading how the scientist were reprogramming them so they couldn't "Make more bees". This apparently backfired into our honey bees and became part of the problem. thea ----- Forwarded Message ----- "Alice" <alice76 Wed, 7 Nov 2007 09:17:52 +1030 RE: Crucial---Help End Genetic Engineering of Food--Our lives depend on it. Guest guest
Probably....but none of us are ever going to know about it unless somebody on the inside spills the beans though. Either way, scientific evidence is 99% BS, we all know that. So, bottom line about GM foods and bee decline is the same as it will be for every other species that exists, and that is this: The Earth was created so that all things living lived in perfect harmony. Perfect balance. One species needs another to survive. Whether plant or animal, or a mixture of the two, it is fact. The existence of one, allows the existence of another. GM Foods are not natural, therefore the natural energies within the plants are not that that the Earth created, could not possibly have the natural energies combined in such a way as to nourish and sustain another living being (for very long) and therefore whether it be GM foods, cell phones or whatever other crap we have allowed "the MAN" to develope, it is because of homo sapiens that the bees are disappearing. Just like the thousands of extinct species of plants and animals that have already succumbed to homo sapiens.

Guest guest
The naturalist David Attenborough, suggest that instead of looking for more ways that humans can harvest the land for human food that we start reducing our population needing food – or something to that effect….. Ishmael by Daniel Quinn offers some interesting insights into the agricultural revolution and how that has impacted the world…. As opposed to hunter gatherer groups… Alice J On Behalf Of Bea Bernhausen Thursday, 8 November 2007 2:25 pm Re: Crucial---Help End Genetic Engineering of Food--Our lives depend on it.
