Is there a nutritional treatment for macular degeneration?http://www.nutritionfarm.com/FAQs/FAQs/mac_degen.htmQuestion: My mom has macular degeneration -- do you have anything that may help her? She is 83 and already takes your pyc's & multi's.Answer: Concerning macular degeneration -- this is a synopsis of what Dr. Wright's Guide to Healing with Nutrition (Keats Publishing) has to say.Macular degeneration is a gradual deterioration of the eye retina, particularly serving the center of the visual field of each eye. This can happen from a deficiency of one or more of the following nutrients: selenium, zinc, vitamin E, and possibly taurine (an amino acid). If your mother has low stomach acidity (sometimes characterized by thin, papery and/or peeling fingernails as well a sometimes dry skin -- you or her should check for this) then it would explain her reduced nutrient absorption, especially of minerals (selenium and zinc). Stomach acidifiers are available if needed. White spots on the fingernails also can demonstrate a zinc deficiency as well as a reduced sense of taste. Note that macular degeneration may be caused by other things besides nutrient deficiency but this is the most plausible cause. Also, apparently if the condition has gone on longer than 2-3 years, the results are not as dramatic although some having the condition for as long as 7 years received benefit from therapy. For example, one 72 year old women, after having the condition for eight months (sight 20/100 and 20/80), was found to have low stomach acid (which led to poor mineral absorption) and was given the above nutrients by IV. She regained much of her sight during her first IV therapy! However, she lost much of it again within 24 hours after the visit. They put her on IV twice a week until the improvement held and then started reducing the IV therapy frequency. She required supplements, stomach acidifiers, and IV therapy off and on for 13 months. She is still taking supplements and stomach acidifiers but has her sight nearly normal (20/40 and 20/30).Meanwhile, your mother should definitely be taking supplements containing selenium, vitamin E, and zinc (and when taking zinc you should also take copper to prevent a zinc/copper imbalance). If she is already taking supplements containing zinc, selenium, and vitamin E, and upping the dose does not improve her condition, she should check her stomach acidity and may require IV therapy of these nutrients. Or supplementing with taurine may help if her stomach acidity is okay and she has poor diet -- taurine, as an amino acid, is available from protein and should be readily available unless she has a poor diet or poor digestive enzymes (lacking the enzymes could affect all amino acid absorption and she should be experiencing other problems as well). Most people do not have a deficiency in taurine. If she has not already tried supplements, she can purchase them most anywhere -- however I have to point out the products we have that would provide the needed nutrients: PolyANTOX™ tablets contains selenium and vitamin E (along with beta-carotene), Folate Plus™ tablets contains zinc (along with copper, vitamin B12 and folic acid), Nutri-Vite™ Mega Minerals tablets that contain selenium, zinc, vitamin E, copper, and other ingredients.

I would also suggest a formula called EW (eyewash) which has eyebright

and other herbs in it. Available at www.mynsp.com/herbal, type in

EW in product search button and then scroll down to EW.

Boil 1/4 cup pure water (not tap). Open up 1 capsule and put in

water, stir and set aside from heat. Strain thru a cheesecloth and

refrigerate. Then bathe the eyes with it when room temperature.

Also take capsules by mouth (at least what's listed on bottle - can

double the amount).
