Guest guest
US WTO Challenge Refuted By GM Food Danger Evidence Revelations Support Ban on GM Crops, As Per UN Biosafety Protocol September 13, Cancun-Investigator Jeffrey M. Smith has documented evidence of health dangers of genetically modified (GM) foods that undermine the U.S. WTO challenge of the EU's policy. The incriminating material, which was released last week in Smith's new book, Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies about the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating, can also be used by nations to support a ban on GM organisms-a right afforded by the UN Biosafety Protocol, which went into force on September 11. The book, which reveals industry and government attempts to cover-up the health dangers, shows that GM foods are putting the health of the population at risk. Evidence shows that: A GM supplement was responsible for a deadly epidemic in the U.S.; Animal feeding studies show health damage and unexplained deaths; A human feeding study confirmed a serious risk that biotech advocates had dismissed; GM foods are inherently unsafe; Industry studies are rigged to avoid finding problems; The U.S. approval process was based on industry influence, not sound science. To keep the incriminating evidence hidden, whistle-blowers were harassed, stripped of responsibilities, or fired. Evidence was stolen. Research data was omitted or distorted. According to Andrew Kimbrell, director of the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Food Safety, "The evidence in Seeds of Deception refutes U.S. science and safety claims, and undermines the basis of their WTO challenge." Arpad Pusztai, a leading expert on GM foods, says, "Seeds of Deception is a major event in informing the public about the safety or (more precisely the lack of it) of genetically modified foods." Pusztai himself had discovered that young rats fed an experimental GM food developed damaged immune systems and digestive function, partial atrophy of the liver, smaller, less developed brains, livers, and testicles, and a potentially pre-cancerous condition. Pusztai made his discovery while coordinating a 20-person research team commissioned by the UK government to develop a safety-testing protocol for GM foods. When he tried to warn the public of his findings, he was fired and silenced with threats of a lawsuit and the testing program was scrapped. Pusztai later reviewed industry-sponsored studies and found that seven of forty rats fed a GM crop died within two weeks; others developed stomach lesions. The crop was approved. Smith offers new evidence that incriminates genetic engineering as the cause of a deadly epidemic in 1989 that killed about 100 Americans and caused 5-10,000 to fall sick. All the victims had consumed the food supplement L-tryptophan, produced by a Japanese manufacturer that had used genetically engineered bacteria in its production process. It now appears that the FDA had tried to divert the blame and suppress information to protect the biotech industry. Smith's research makes it clear that GM foods are inherently unsafe. The process itself damages the DNA's structure and function and the technology relies on numerous assumptions that have already proven incorrect (see enclosed chart). Smith says, "The U.S. WTO challenge of Europe's GM Food policy is based on the assumption that GM foods are safe. Overwhelming evidence shows this to be untrue." In addition, the United Nations Biosafety Protocol, which went into force on September 11, allows nations to ban GM crops based on a risk assessment. According to Dr. Tewolde B.G. Egziabher, spokesperson of the African Group on Biosafety, the revelations in Seeds of Deception provide relevant information that nations may use when considering such a ban. Author Jeffrey Smith has worked in the field of genetically modified foods for nearly a decade-with non-profit and political groups, and at a GMO detection laboratory. He proposed legislation to protect children-who are most at risk from the potential health effects of GM foods-and to protect farmers from genetic drift. Seeds of Deception is published by Yes!
